laptop music sofware

Allo boy 'n' girls!
can anyone recommend some software for my laptop? I want to put all my cd's on my laptop so i can take it to gig's with me, Program needs to sort tunes into alphabetical order so i can access easily but will only be used if a client request's a tune i havn't got on record (gettin a bit lazy in my old age)
would be greatful for any help as the only program i know is music match?confused:

Do you mean software to play the tracks as well, or just a program to catalogue everything to help you find the CDs?

If the later, then Catraxx seems to be the most popular choice for this kind of thing... http://www.fnprg.com/catraxx/

If the former, well... there are loads of different peices of software and its very much down to personal tasted. Some to try are PCDJ (Red, VRM and FX versions), OtsDJ, and Virtual DJ. Try having a search on the forum, as these have all been argu.. i mean, discusssed many times before.

yes i want to play as well i'm a little bit old school in i still use my sl1210's but i have loads of music on cd but don't really want to carry all the disc's with me all the time so the idea is to use the laptop as storage but pick tracks from it as i need them.

Your other option, of course is to go down the route of one of the new USB Hard Drive controllers (Cortex already out; Denon in the near future; and Numark shortly after that)

Well! thats gonna have me busy for a while! seems like Traktor 3 is used by more of you so i'll try that although I have downloaded Danno's sugestion while I've been doing this, I take it the music match is not quiet as useful then?

I'm not that familiar with music match, but its just a domestic player. It doesn't have the dual deck setup like proper DJ software does. This means you can output each player to a different channel on your mixer and be able to cue and mix. You'll need a soundcard with 2 stereo outputs though, which usual come as USB devices, this is worthwhile getting as laptop internal soundcards usually aren't very good quality.

I have tried all the different software out there but still find pcdj red old version is by far the best but you will need a usb soundcard to play from 2 channels left and right you can also get a controller for it dac2 cost aprox £200 but saying that the new cortex is the way forward at the price of £449 great peice of kit hope this helps

Fine, so whats this problem with Cortex then? apart from you dont push buttons--you use the keyboard for smooth searching cueing and starting:D

I havent noticed any particular time delay problem---have you Dave/Spin?

I don't think a great deal - I reckon the main buyers of the hard drive readers will be DJs that are currently using CDs.

Not so sure about that Ang - don't forget, the Denon unit connects to CD drawers too.

Also people who carry two laptops and an Ipod might be interested in getting a Denon.:D

You need a mini keyboard from the Holiday Camp £19-99.

Cue up-then hold down ctrl and hit space bar when you need to start --its instant. Bang!

As I understand it, with the Cortex, if you hit 'Play' it doesn't? Well, not instantly.
Surely that makes it pretty useless as player for DJ use and only good for background music?
I don't mix much, because I can't:D and don't really need to as a party DJ, but I couldn't use something that wasn't instant start:eek:
My original cheapo domestic CD players were instant!!!!
That 'feature' alone will make the Coretex in to one of those dead dogs that was famous for how badly it failed to do what it was designed for:(

Well if you don't mix.. then its probably instant enough, just the one i played with wasn't any where near as quick as my DMC1/PCDJ setup.. which is still not as quick as a cd player like the denon dn4000.

Part of the problem may be down to the buttons though.. they're not nice and soft like most CD players (and the DMC) you really have to give them a good push. Although, this could just be due to this particular machine not being "worn in".
