Low Fog

Has anyone used the low fog units which use ice to generate the low lying fog?

Just seen one reasonably cheap and thought it might look rather nice for first dances at weddings (as that's about all I'm doing this year).

Any thoughts or are they a waste of cash?

is there a link rice? dont know where youd stand with smoke detectors etc ?

waste of money, used one a few yrs ago, used buckets of ice then leaks everywhere (tried ice blocks not cold enough) and as the fog warms up which takes seconds, it rises up like any normal smoke machine. its not as thick as dry ice either. think they where 700 quid new when they first came out, if you look on the net you can make one for a tenner, using a cool box and some pipe.

I had one of these years ago it was called a pea souper and worked really well sometimes too well! but you have to use DRY ice and you don't need to much but it's not good to handle and causes burns and frostbite when it comes into contact with flesh, it also has the odd tendancy to explode because it works by combining extreme heat with extreme cold
there are other types of machine now that work with normal smoke fluid (think there made by jem) but they aint cheep

sorry didn't know you had to put ice in them, point i was try to make was in the 30 or so years nothing has come close to the pea souper thats why its (or simular) still used in theatre's sometime there's no substitute for the real thing, I don't suppose you'd get away with using one in public place now and you need a licence to buy dry ice now too!

I've got one of the skytec low foggers and although its a bit of a ball ache to setup its does look good, plus i charge it out as an "extra"

Thats the model i have, I alway take a freezer box with some ice in it, there's nothing worse than a bar not being "able" to spare the ice.

Paul, I take it you have none of the problems with the model you have that Mike had with the one he used and mentioned here?

Its not as thick as proper dry ice, i'll accept that. but haven't had any leakage problems, the skytec has a pump to empty the water. A lot depends on the room, if its unusually warm then I cram as much ice as possible into the machine to keep it as cool as poss.
