Successful Bloopers....

Anyone dropped any clangers and found them to be a stroke of luck?

I did an indie themed 18th birthday tonight and had 'When We Were Young' by The Killers cued up (or so I thought), about 8.05ish when people were starting to come in. When I hit play I realised I'd cued up track 2 instead of track 3 on the Sam's Town album. Just as I was about to rectify it, I realised what the song was. It's called Interlude - it's a slow 30 second piano tune with the following lyrics: "We hope we enjoy your stay...".

After a couple of bars, I dropped the volume slightly and welcomed everyone to the venue and wished the lad a happy birthday, then whacked on some Kaiser Chiefs. It sounded class and well rehearsed. I might have to do it again! :cool:

I can't think of any successful bloopers.

I remember an embarrrassing one though...when I announced the first dance. I got a little tongue-tied, and asked if we could have the gride and broom on the dancefloor!

Going back a few years... but still funny and cringey all at the same time :p

Typical family disco. This middle-aged bloke wearing an open-necked shirt with seriously hairy chest and HUGE medallion gets up and starts strutting. I'd just changed the song when I noticed him, so I turned to the roadie, gestured towards blokey, and shouted 'look at that twit' (or similar :cool: )... except I'd not cancelled the mic.... :eek:

Thankfully most of the audience agreed with me and a good laugh was had all round... :lol:

I remeber back in the 12" days on a couple of occasions I played a record on deck A mixed it in to the record on deck B and then without thinking I took the needle off deck B thinking that was the one I had just finished with. I felt like a right plonker in front of the crowd. I went bright red.

Doesn't just happen on vinyl. Like accidentally taking the wrong fader down or pressing the wrong cue button on cds too.

And just to rub salt in, you have done it on the biggest promo track you have in the bag. The one that the crowd love.

Back before DJ CD players were common, the 'disable eject while playing' feature was the holy grail......
At least with the black plastic you could just drop the needle back on.
CD ejects, push draw back, wait for TOC, remember & select track, wait to find track, ahhh away we go again!

I had a dnb set about 6 months ago one tune was coming up to the drop and by mistake I nudged the pitch on the technics with the incoming track. I wasn't really listening as I knew they were matched. So up goes the upfader and in comes the fight at the cymbal and drum factory cue 100 people looking at me like I am dog dirt. Then the outgoing track goes into this slow down and the tunes just lock. How good am I eh? :eek:

I was specifically told 'no cheese' on Saturday night, which was clarified to be stuff like the Timewarp, YMCA, Macerena, Hey Baby... you get the idea...

It was relatively early, and I was generally playing slower tempo, easy to dance to stuff. I decided to play 'Mysterious Girl', so I cue'd it, or at least I thought I had... guess what came on instead :eek:

Big 'duck down behind the decks' moment, even though it did fairly well... :o

I've done similar, cued what I thought was the right track, found out that my Roadie, ie my brother when he can help, gave me the wrong disc (ie I ask for a cd and he'll find it) needless to say the last slow dance was well, rather up beat.

I have managed to achieve pressing the wrong pause button, needless to say music cuts, followed by a short gap, and back on again, small explanation providied. :bang:

I had around 150 Army Cadets giving it their all on the NAAFI dancefloor, leaned back to take the photo, onto the Fire Alarm.:o
When they came back in from the evacuation (and torrential rain !) the Commandant thanked me for a convenient break to draw the raffle :confused:

The only one I can remember was at a club I played at a bit I had to unplug the CD players to put some bar-towels underneath as we were getting some skipping (the power lead had caught on something so we couldn't lift the unit high enough to slip the towels underneath).

Long story short: there was a turntable and a copy of 'Mony Mony' so I popped it on to effect the switch of CD player, but of course, not being a vinyl DJ, I left it on 45 rather than switching to 33, whereby an entire room of people started to do something akin to the chicken dance trying to keep up with Billy 'Chipmunk' Idol... I was about to remedy the situation when the boss said, 'Nah, leave it, they're having a blast', so I did, 'cause they were.

Not being funny but don't you check the track before you play it?
I also have a quick play through the headphones to make sure it is the right one... and also if it is a bit of a slow beginning just to get into the right place etc. :confused: :rolleyes:

Haha, yeah I do 99% of the time, and in fact, I did in this case too. However, I cue'd the track on the first beat initially, before changing my mind as i was going to mix it differently. To reset the cue point to the start of the track, I used the track select knob, but it is a bit fidgety, and somehow I managed to skip to the next track by accident :rolleyes:

Not a succesful blooper but... I used to work in a club and the place was always very busy, the stewards used to frequent the booth to sneak a drink, and used to get great pleasure turning off the power to the technics turntable whilst playing, then walk away, obviously the record playing gets slower and slower as I franically hit the start button... was caught out a few times with that!
Another time I went to the loo and on my way back fell into the booth (from a stage to the side) and hit my knee off of the corner of the turntable knocking the room into silence and me unable to stand up to to start another song.... cue the longest 20 seconds ever.

A good one for me was when the Numark DMC controller crashed the other week, luckily i have a back up collection of cds which is the essential series from mastermix, i flicked through the book Pulled out The Monkey's - I'm A Beliver (As it was a 60th birthday) played that and the dancefloor got rammed out:D

I once did a Fancy dress disco for a 30th Birthday, and decided to award first place to an excellent Miami Vice bloke, complete with the white suit, hawaiian shirt open 3 buttons down, hairy chest and medallion. Only to find the bloke didn't know it was fancy dress.... Oops sorry, you wanted successful bloopers didn't you. Never mind, got a laugh off everyone else there!
