Just come back from a gig -

3 tracks into the start of the night it was quite clear that the sound limiter was set FAR to quick for a successful evening. You could clearly hear people talking over the music and the limiter was going into "reset".

I plugged EVERYTHING out, and redirected to a mains socket which wasnt protected by a sound limiter.

Any thoughts?

good on ya, there a pain and spoil the night by making you worry with wondering if all of your equipment is going to go off and get damaged, i say thumbs up imho:beer1:

There's a place local to me that has one, do quite a lot there. The caretaker actually advised me not to plug into certain sockets as they were running through the limiter. He even offered a couple of 50 meter extensions to plug in the other side of the room. ha!

last gig I did with a sound limiter, I sprayed hairspray on the microphone and it worked a belter, (If you can locate the mic) just thereten to walk out and cancel the night seems to work a treat!

Out of curiosity, why hairspray?? Does it have a muffling effect? Or was it something you just happened to have on you, and tried it?

Hairspray hardens when is drys.

Technical bit: -

So when yo spray it on thr diaphram of a microphone it becomes ridged - less vibration on the diaphram the less sensitive it is.

I think the only issue for you, is between you and the venue. The worse that could happen is that you would be barred from working there again.
It is the venue that will get in trouble for limiter being bypassed, as it is their entertainment licence.


Out of curiosity, why hairspray?? Does it have a muffling effect? Or was it something you just happened to have on you, and tried it?

Maybe it had a bad effect and blocked its synuses so it couldn't hear properly :D
Either that, or it got dirctly on to the diaphragm and made it stiffer and therefore less sensitive.

because then you would be abusing them by firing a stun gun at them ..... however if they were warned if you are too loud this will happen ..... well ..... on their own heads be it :D :D :D ;)

Good on you for bypassing limiter, I have played with them for years and know what is an acceptable volume whatever the limiter says. Never had a complaint from the venue or locals in 20 years.

I dont think spraying anything wet onto an electrical appliance is a very good idea really is it? and it's not just down to the venue as posted above! apart from the fact you could cause the loss of the venues M & D licence, under present noise polution regs you could have your equipment seized!

I wouldn't advise tamperering with any peice of equipment that isn't yours.

I know limiters are annoying, but it's not yoiur place to be spraying hairspray or doing anything else to them.

Totally agree with darren! they are a pain but they are there for a reason and as the average price for one of these nasty things is around a grand you could well have to pay for a repair or replacement should you damage it so best left well alone eh? what doesn't help is some of the people from the council don't know how to set thes things up properly, I had readings taken at a pub I ran and the person who took the reading had the meter on the wrong scale!
