View Full Version : DJing Consistencies
music-2-play

Just a random observation that I'd be interested in hearing some responses on. I've noticed that regarldless of where I work (birthday/bar/theme night etc) or age group, there are usually two consistencies:
1) Somebody will always come up (8 years old - 80) and ask 'Ya Got Any Sean Paul? I've come to the conclusion that all Sean Paul songs have formed a homogenous musical blob, so much so that it no longer matters what Sean Paul song it is, as long as people get their Sean Paul fix.
2) Whenever I play 500 Miles by the Proclaimers, people will begin to sing the first chorus too early, forgetting the double-verse at the beginning.
Anybody else's observations of consistencies will be greatly appreciated :)

Oh yes!
I've actually just found some video footage of a show last year showing exactly that :bang: :bang:

Somebody will ask for a song (doesn't matter which song) roughly 10 mins after you've actually played it

I'm in Edinburgh, heart of Proclaimers country and everyone STILL does this every time. Cue some riddiculing on the mic. Will they ever learn.

..or ask you for a song while it is playing. They when you point out that you are playing it they supidily ask 'are you?'
I mean do they not know what the song they want sounds like.......    aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ... does my nut in.:bang:

I agree with both of those.. although last summer it used to be Pussycat Dolls instead of Sean Paul, but now seems to have migrated back to the stupid-sounding-fake-accent kn0b head... i'm not a big fan :D

I think any DJ who's ever play it anywhere will have spotted this!
And any party/personality DJ will have taken the mick as well - I do :D
If there's a mate/doorman/staff nearby I always turn to them and say on the mic, something like "They're gonna get it wrongs as usual aren't they?"
Then we pee ourselves when they predictably do :D
There's another a bit like that as well, but can't just remember...... hopefully get a reminder at weekend

A rush of requests just when you've announced the last song? :p
Old people sitting right next to the speaker stack (out of choice, because let's face it - they're always there first) then complaining about the volume
The drunk who falls into your console round-a-bout 11:30?
The Macarena line that jumps the wrong way on the first verse?
I'm sure I can think of a few more... hang on...

Other ones include:
Grease Megamix people always start the clapping one bar too early on the tail end of Grease Lightning before it segués into 'Summer Lovin''.
Also a couple of times I've grabbed the mic and said "One rhythm at a time, please!"
Billy Idol 'White Wedding', people always do the "Start agaaaaaaaain" bit on the first chorus when that's the only one where he just goes "start again".

I got one last week that I meant to mention...
The situation where you've just finally got the floor packed out with some decent dance music, in this case 'Take Me to the Clouds Above', 'Lola's Theme', and a little later on 'Silence', and some muppet comes up and asks for Toto 'Africa'. I very nearly played the Eric Prydz remix thereof just to spite him, but I didn't, I just kept going with what was actually working (and the bride's requests, too).

Best one....which I had as usual last night...."Can you play some modern music?" (I'd literally turned things on their head after doing half hour of oldies for those who requested them)...to which I looked at the woman....as all her friends where 'putting their hands up for detroit!' in front of her.

I always get the can you play something new? one when I've spent the previous hour doing just that to an empty dancefloor and finally jumped to some classics to salvage the situation and filled the floor... two songs after the last new one, invariably.
Sometimes it's the other way around... can you play something old? etc.

I got similar last night.... I was doing a boozer that I cover occasionaly for the resident DJ. Being a town boozer the audience changes every 20~30mins so it's a work of art avoiding repeating myself

Well - my crowd were 'odd' as it was an Engagement Party for a couple who actually got engaged last year but wanted to make it official.
No kids present and a bunch of younger women, middle aged groups and older relations - all with their own tastes, so younger women get up to dance to something, the others sit down and vice versa. Was also told 120 were invited - my calculations about 70 turned up complete with blokes with girlfriends - girlfriends danced all night, the lads just drank and made themselves look daft on the dancefloor. Some usual floorfillers failed, other tracks I rarely play worked, sometimes I had a full floor, then half gone - geez it was hard work.
Good thing was - it was my residency - so I know a lot of cash was put into the till - I know because they sat chatting and drinking until 9.30pm when the buffet was opened and I cranked things up from 10.15pm to midnight.
Ended up giving the fiancee's mum and her friends a lift home (near me) at 12.45 when I had packed up and put gear away.

I was doing a dinner dance a few weeks ago and this chap in his 60s came up for a request. I was thinking 60s or maybe 70s until he said (in quite a posh voice) "Excuse me, you don't have any trance dance do you?"
To say I was taken aback was an understatement!
I played 10 mins of commercial trance to an empty floor apart from him and his wife and after he came over and thanked me profusely and apologised for the lack of others on the floor!

Oh god I HATE those absentee requesters - they're usually the ones that promise me that they and a bunch of their mates will defo jump on the floor for it, and even if I play the song straight away they are somehow miraculously outside having a fag, or each other, or something.
If I'm ever in any doubt as to whether a song is going to work I will always announce it as a request, that way if it bombs I can suggest to the rest of the guests that maybe they should get up and make a request.

Another song people always come in too early with is Reef - Place your hands... reminded me when i had it happen on Friday!

That's my pet hate too. You're happily playing away cheesy stuff to a packed dance floor and someone asks for a song that you cheerily queue for them only to find that when it starts everyone decides it's time to sit down and the person who requests it suddenly comes over all shy and you're left with an empty dancefloor. I agree with propellerheadcase and announce these tracks as requests. I keep a notepad with me so when people request tracks I can jot down their name and song so if it bombs (and it very often does!) I can name and shame and generally take the mick a bit. After all, empty dancefloors are not good for a DJ's reputation.

Had that last week, whilst playing Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby "How much more modern than the current number one would you like it"
Have you notied whenever you get this, 9 times out of 10 they say modern, as if all you've played so far has been ancient.

Absolutely, I have to remember not to get annoyed with the punter as that's generally not the way it's meant, or if it is it's because they're mildly retarded.
Or I was playing modern, and no one danced, so I switch to some oldies, then they come up asking for "modern" stuff... "Where were you for the last hour, chief?"

This thread is sooo accurate. Another song they sing too early on is "Cant Take My Eyes Off You". Also you can guarantee that at every gig if there is a number where the audience clap along there are a couple of bozos who clap on the off beat - no sense of rhythm at all.
