Web site that I can't shift

Had and am still having a problem today.

Somehow, the following web site is now automatically launching every time I open internet explorer:

My wife seems to have clicked the OK button at some point today and downloaded a piece of software called "Spydawn" - details here:

I have uninstalled the software, but still getting the first website all the time (even though I have changed the "home" page in IE settings). I also now have a "system alert" in the start tray (round ? in blue circle changing to a red no entry sign).

I have and run Norton security on the PC and all is running fine.

Any idea how I can resolve this problem (switching off and back on again does not solve it!)

OH NO!!!

I have had somthing like that and its a **** bugger to get rid of it!!!!

Try this:

1. Disable System Restore.
To disable, do the following:
a. Right click on My Computer > Properties
b. Select the System Restore Tab
c. Check "Turn Off System Restore" to disable.
d. Click Apply
e. A message "This deletes all existing restore points" will appear, click Yes to disable.
f. Click OK.

2. Go here and download the trial version of AVG Anti-spyware. Install and update.

3. Go here and download SmitfraudFix. Extract all the files to your desktop, it will create the folder SmitfraudFix.

4. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. (Press F8 at boot, select "Safe Mode" and press Enter)

5. Open the folder Smitfraudfix on your desktop and double-click on smitfraudfix.cmd. "Enter your Choice: (1,2,3,4,L,Q):" Select option 2. Wait for process to finish. (If prompted for: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry? Press Y, for Yes).

6. It will check if your wininet.dll file is damaged, if so it will ask you to "Replace Infected File?" Press Y as Yes and press Enter.

7. Open AVGAS and do a "Complete system scan". Set all items to "Delete" then click "Apply all actions".

8. Restart in normal mode and scan with an online scanner such as ActiveScan or Kaspersky to be sure you're clean.

9. Last, remember to re-enable System Restore. Uncheck Disable System Restore.


Hopefully this will help the enormous amount of people having trouble with w32.Myzor.FK@yf.

Have you been to the Norton web site and had your machine scanned??

Also, go to start, Find / search (dependinging on which version of windows you have), and run a search for spydawn.*, then you should be able to delete the results, now the WARNING bit, it may come up with similar file names that may be required to run a programme, don't delete them. You will notice that a date comes up next to the file name, so, if it was installed on, say 01/03/07, then that date next to the file will give you a clue, but if it says, say 01/01/1999, it's been there a while and probably has a nice job helping run windows, so leave it alone.

No doubt some one will come along and explain this a lot simpler.

And talk of the devil: I assume that is the XP version of a quick fix.

W32.Myzor.fk@yf trojan is a highly dangerous spyware. Usually it may log keyboard activity of the user and take snapshots of the system. It uses stealth installation and its removal is very difficult.

Why not use system restore, and try to jump back to before the offending spyware was installed?

Thats is to make sure it runs smoothly as when you do major things like this it creates restore points which then keeps bits of data with the virus in it :) and well it happens again :D

And, once fixed install Spybot S&D (freeware) immediately and be sure and select the TeaTimer option (TeaTimer asks you to confirm any and all regitsry changes as they happen).

My biggest concern here is that I have had Norton running all the time - surely something like thos shouldn't have been able to affect my computer?

I'm afraid the biggest thing Norton have going for them is their name...

I use Bitdefender, and my PC has been 100% healthy for years, and it's been on 24-7 for most of that :thumbs_up:
