Monitor speakers in a booth

If i want to use some speakers run from the mixer booth output, Will it still need to go to an amp first if Passive. I assume to do this i need some small active speakers?

You would still need an amp if they were passive yes. Although Active seems a better route for this sort of thing in my humble opinion.
