DJ blind-spots...

OK, time to 'fess up, does anyone find themselves not being quite as on point as they should be with certain areas of music?

It's weird, I'm a big fan of late 60s early 70s rock, particularly Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and The Doors, yet, for some reason, I never seem to be able to jump to a convincing set of 70s rock beyond some late-period Doors, 'You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet', 'Alright Now', etc., and some Fleetwood Mac and Queen.

Firstly, does anyone have any suggestions as to some tracks I should be using (maybe a "Top 10 Classic Rock" is in order, unless I missed it?).

Secondly, does anyone else find themselves balking at some genre or period that they really shouldn't be?

You know I've had one request for Status Quo in 12 years of DJing. But yeah, that's one I should remember.

to be honest these are realy the only "rock" tracks i play unless its a very long night and im getting asked for them

it dont tend to play any of the 70's rock, never found it goes down all that well

as far as blind spots in music, i know its not the righjt thing at every disco but i love stuff like children of the night by nakatomi and the stuff that goes with it.
think it must be the high energy of it all or just the fact that its not something you play all the time

Yeah, but the bulk of those are 80s, and I don't have that particular blindspot. I'd occasionally add 'Good Times' INXS and Jimmy Barnes as well.

I used to do rock nights and a lot of classic stuff was requested. What about Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple (classic guitar riff) and Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper? Then there's Motorheads Ace Of Spades and Black Sabbaths Paranoid, both of which still get requested at family gigs I do such as birthdays and weddings. And one of the most popular recently due to a Greatest Hits album is ELO's Mr Blue Sky. And we must not forget the Who's Pinball Wizzard and I always throw in Crocodile Rock by Elton John which always gets crowds dancing. Does this help give you some ideas?

As for DJ blind-spots, my weakness is probably Northern Soul. I used to get loads of requests for Northern Soul and, to be honest, I didn't have a clue so I invested in a couple of good compilation albums (Ultimate Northern Soul is a good one) and at least I now have a number of tracks to choose from. I've found a song called The Snake by Al Wilson (is this name right? Not sure at this time of the morning!!) is pretty popular. Other than this, I don't really have any weaknesses cos I've being involved in music and entertainment for such a long time (that makes me sound really old - I'm only 31 but I've been studying music since I was 7 and listening to it since before then).

I tend to stear clear of anything too heavy as if I'm wrong it has such a massively negative effect on the floor and can be really hard to come back from, as such Motorhead and even Black Sabbath just don't get a look in unless I know I have a hard rockin' crowd.

Interestng about 'Mr Blue Sky' as I'd've put 'Rock'n'Roll is King', 'Hold on Tight', 'Don't Bring Me Down' and 'Livin' Thing' ahead of that as popular ELO songs.

To re-state my question more clearly, I think what I maybe not confident in jumping to are 70s stadium rock numbers like Frampton, Chicago, Foreigner, BTO, Free, etc. Not that I don't know them, just that I really don't know how they'll go down so I've never chanced my arm, as they say.

Stuff I'm probably that knowledgeable about is stuff like the real heavy indie seen - like System of a Down and all that lot - the real grungy stuff that the Emo/Goth type teens like.

Then again, probably the reason I don't bother is that it's all particularly pants, depressing and I always think of what I was told many years ago by a DJ:

"Yeah....I'll play it - if you can show me how you dance to it!"
