Seeing other DJs perform

We're all guilty of it, you know the situation!, we attend a party and sit all night criticising (sp?) the DJ and scrutinising his performance. Some of us might approach the DJ with the dreaded line "Hi...I'm a DJ!", personally I don't but I know many who do. It got me thinking about why we as DJs tend to always be on 'critique' mode when were at an event we're not doing?. I can't imagine a bus driver getting on a bus and commenting on how well the other drivers doing, or barman going to another pub on his night off and commenting on how the bar staff are doing their job. What is it that makes us so critical of others?. Us DJs are strange creatures :D

yep many who have failed to evolve and shed their primeval instincts .... bathe nightly in testosterone and live to be worshipped by the masses.... are over defensive and live by the ideal that attack is the best form of defence.

then there is the very good ones open to new ideas , accept critisizm and act upon it and help out others who ask for guidance. and when out don't voice an opinion unless asked for and appreciate the positives in others performance. (thankfully lots of the latter on this site ive found)

I LOVE seeing other DJs perform...not so I can go up & say "I'm a DJ too" or be critical, but simply to get ideas...particularly regarding any songs they play that work well & which I hadn't thought of using before.

Sadly it only happens about once a year, as I'm usually out working myself.

No work tonight though, so I'm helping a friend with his gig. I'm Looking forward to it, as he's picking me up on the way - so I can drink, and I won't have the usual responsibility, and I might even pick up a few music tips!

agghhh ... yes I can't stop criticising the DJ when I'm out. That's because I think I'm a DJ God of some kind. :Embarassed:

...and yes in my day job I criticise how others in my line of work do their job.:o

...and yes my DJ mates do it also and we rip the back out of other DJs who don't weigh up. Sometimes we get on like a bunch of nasty witches.:p

I think it's built in to us - like when your driving and another driver doesn't indicate or something silly and then you critcise their driving.

To be honest, I only pay attention if the DJ is obviously bad - if it's a half decent disco I just go with the flow and enjoy it like any other person there

I ave to admit i am one that does critisize the DJ....would never dream of saying hi ....I'm a dj etc but they usualy suss it out when i perhaps mention thier equiptment and discuss my opionion on it etc lol

Yup, exactly the same here! Unless it crops up in conversation, I will avoid saying that I'm a DJ, so as not to make the other guy go on his guard thinking I may be critisizing them. (even if I am:D )

I think it is natural to judge everyone and everything and compare and you will tend to do it about things you have knowledge of - but I am happy to praise another dj if they deserve it - not just criticise. Watching Brian Mole and Neil Brown working at the SEDA AGM last Sunday it was clear why they are at the top of the profession.

well..... i work as a bus driver during the day and yes i do find myself critisising their driving etc. and my wife used to be a manager for bass and every time we go in a pub for a drink she will pass comment on the staff, cleanliness, quality of beer and even if they havent changed the oil in the fryers !!!!

Well that kinda puts rest to my theory then :). Good to know it's not just us DJs that are critical of their peers.

Very true. If a DJ is good I will go and coment and say how impressed I am with the show. I will perhaps ask for a card and recomend them for gigs I cant do. I think all the quality DJ's should help eachother out and hopefully one day the DJ will be seen more as a proffesional worker and not just a part timer who could do with some extra cash. If they are cheap and nasty I just wont bother making conversation as I can see that they are one of the reasons I have to charge lower rates than I perhaps would expect to for a full disco show. You know "Bob will do it for £80. Can you beat that?"

nah i had to give her away (best day of my life :D ) so wasnt allowed to do the disco on pain of death. and the venue said if they bought their own dj in it would cost them something stupid like 200 quid for the privalidge.

And wot's that about eh? I've heard of that practice as well. The truth is it doesn't make much difference to the venue, it won't matter to the venue if the 3rd party DJ is crap, they must loose more business than they gain doing this.
