n00b help wanted for IEC plugs.

OK,

The double derby has been delivered from thomann but with euro 2 pin plugs, I want ot change it over to an IEC kettle plug, any sparkies out there want to help. (I am a mecanical engineer so make the instructions incredibly simple to swap em over.)

Nah, shouldn't be any problems there as there is only one end with a moulded plug :D. The other end goes into the unit itself. So anyone? I want to chop the moulded end off and replace it with the IEC male. I can probably do the wiring and soldering myslf but I am a little afraid of getting the connectors wrong.

1. Chop nasty euro plug off
2. Strip back outer sheath (take about 200-250mm), leaving *hopefully* 3 cores of cable and (if applicable) slide the cable gland down the cable out of the way.
3. Strip each core back about 75-100mm and twist the individual tiny cores so they don't fray.
4. Open up the IEC, and remove the cable grip (you could leave one screw done up loosely)
5. The IEC will be labelled L, N and E. L = Live, N = Neutral and E = Earth. The earth pin is the middle one. I think the neutral is the one on the right if you look at it from the end the cable goes into the IEC, but check on the plug.
6. Cable colours mean =
Red/Brown = LIVE
Blue/Black = NEUTRAL
Green/Yellow = EARTH.
7. Undo screws (not all the way, just enough to get the cable under them) for each pole/pin. wrap the bare wire round the screw, hold the cable tightly (so it doesn't slip) and screw it up tightly. (This will take some practice, and probably won't work first time. Spend some time working whats best for you (IEC plugs/sockets are one of the worst to wire up!)
8. Once wired up, pull up the cable gland, and put it in place, chuck on the cable grip, tighten (but not too much), chuck the lid back on and screw.
9. Open fridge, lean in, take beer. (Close fridge....drink)

Oh, and get the IEC plugs from RS components, far better and easier to wire.

I know is a tedious idea but when i did mine i was told to heat and cover the end of the bare wire with solder, then it becomes more solid, use round ended pliers to twist it into a circle that goes clockwise so as not to intwist it. It makes it longer but the connection is much more secure

The one's that are much easier to wire have small holes instead of the screws - try and get those, they are a million times easier to wire.

carry a cupl of schko adaptors from maplin u never know when u might need them and dont use shaver plugs
