18th birthday party

just a quick question, i'm booked for an 18th birthday party at a castle near me tonight and the birthday boy called yesterday saying that he wants us to play everything that we would usually play at an 18th to keep everyone happy and dancing (i.e dance, RNB & hip hop) but he would like metalica played aswell. i personally think this will kill the party. Anyone ever had one like this, if so how did you overcome it?

Play it either at the start when everyone is to busy talking or at the end when they want to go home anyway. :)

Sorry, just seen this...so, how did it go?
I have had many functions like this where the birthday boy or girl has a split group of friends. Half of them like RnB, Chart and Dance etc and the other half are all into Indie, Rock, Emo etc...It's one of the hardest nights to do in my opinion as when they are at that age, they really are into their genre of music and you always get instances where when you are playing Dance, the Indie kids moan and when you are playing Indie, the RnB lovers moan. The idea is to try and find a common ground that everyone will like which usually means party stuff but then again, sometimes (not all the time) when they are at that age they think that they are too cool for party stuff.

What I would have done is tested the water a bit and built up to Metallica. There are some bands that are quite universal in that most people will get up to them..stuff like The Fratellis, The Kooks, Blur, Arctic Monkeys and Red Hot Chili Peppers... I would have done some of them to see how they went down and chucked on Metallica at some point during them.

Enter Sandman was a big enough hit to get away with, Kid Rock 'Cowboy' samples Metallica's 'Sad but True' (and there is a mash-up out there using both tunes, fully). There are also a couple of remixes of Metallica tracks - DJ Spooky remixed 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' which could be worked in with some more mainstream guitar-based dance.

Actually, Solitaire, the Jay-Z/Metallica mash-up that Cheap Cologne did was, for a short while, available from his site and it was semi-legitimate as he was selling it as promotional material for his other work... he has since been served with a Cease & Desist by the RIAA. MAterial created for promotional purposes is another murky area of copyright law, internationally.

I find that with situations like this where there's young people with big mixed music taste (some like chart etc. others like indie) It's best to play something from a few years back that both groups will remember and want to dance to. After all; it's the "Ooh I remember this one!" buzz that gets a lot of people going at parties. For 18ths and the like - some good ones are:

Will Smith - Welcome to Miami
Basement Jaxx - Red Alert/Romeo/Rendezvous
Chumbawumba - Tubthumping (for the boys - it works!)
DJ Aligator - The Whistle Song (The Inuendo never fails to amuse them :|)
Shaggy - Boombastic

Lots of chart stuff from the late 90s early 00s goes down well as they'd forgotten about most of it. Obviously the classic "Old Skool" goes down well too: Livin' Joy - Dreamer/Don't Stop Movin', Strike - U sure do, Nightcrawlers - Push the feeling on etc.

And when they're drunk of course, they'll all dance to anything!

It was nothing to do with that.

It was the phrase "If you don't mind downloading illegally for a one off" that was noticed, not by me, but another member of the forum.

Though, as I said, it's strictly speaking illegal, even though the material was supposed to be promtional in the first place, which makes it legal, but the RIAA saw it as infringing, which makes it illegal...

Sorry people aint had time to pop on. It went remarkably well, as many of you said when doing 18th's there is always a mixed group of friends. We played it after they had sung happy birthday to the birthday boy, apart from that it was RnB, dance and good old classics all night long, apart from the customer distinctivly telling us to make sure we are there for a 7pm start and no sign of the customer or guests until 8, apart from that it was an ok night, just got the 4 more this week to do now:(

Being "fashionably" late is a common thing amongst 18th birthdays! You'll find yourself playing background music for a good hour until any bleeder turns up.

Perhaps share your "good old classics" with us? Never hurts to have some new ideas. Although the punters are none the wiser, it's nice to not be able to try something you never have before (music wise!) once in a while.

Don't sweat it - take Enter Shikari for example (currently doing a storm everywhere without a record deal) - these guys are proof positive that chavs like Linkin Park... :rolleyes:

The 'Sad But True' mashup can be done really easy yourself... the track in question is 'American Badass', and about halfway through has a stop in it before a fast section.

While the first part of this song is playing, get yourself Metallica's black album, track 2 is the original 'Sad But True', and cue it through the intro to the stop at the end of that.

Once the Kid Rock song reaches its stop - start the Metallica track.
