i can remember my first gig it was ebout 17 years ago for 150ppl i was using a set of fal decks fal speakers and light screens
i remember i played candy station young harts run free and turned around to get another record
i turned back around the dance floor was full
i thought to myself i am in heaven

mine was in 1992, I dont really remember much but it was at a local hotel, we had made out we had been in business years and new what we was doing, of course we didn't, equipment was a citronic thames 2 two huge speakers and lots of light boxes and screens, some fuzz lights an old rope light and some dodgy par scanners, seemed to recall most of this was hired, borrowed or belonged to the hotel, no cd's all records, about 8 crates of 7" and 12" we also borrowed from a friend DJ (Cheers Kev) seem to also recall using a double cassette deck plugged into the console, it all worked pretty well, but we didn't have a clue and im surprised we got paid, but we did, and 14 or so years later im still doing it.

PS: played in same hotel 2 weeks ago, buggers remembered me too lol.

My absolutely firsty gig was a mate's 21st at a hotel that had all the gear, I just had to turn up with the CDs. Amazingly people danced, so I was hooked! My mate only asked me to do it because I had more CDs than anyone else he knew.

My first genuine paid gig for the mobile company that I still work for was three weeks after my father died (coming up ine years ago), so I wasn't in the best frame of mind. I couldn't understand why people wouldn't dance to these really cool remixes I had... learnt a lot since then.

My firsy gig was 1983 in a middle school in gwent south wales. Started helping out with my dad ( who is also a DJ but retiring this year)
Were using singles, albums and an old 8 track cassette player. No lighting controllers as we know them these days but an old motor relay system to creat similar effect. Old Oil effect on wall from an ex cinema projector (still use the old optikinetcs oil wheel now occasionally but with a new projector)
4 big boxes of singles 2 of albums twin decks with 1 100 watt rms per channel amp with 4 12 inch speakers with rather nice light brown leatheret effect on them. Classy lol
Makes me cringe a bit these days but it was considered pretty flash in those days, even had real police light on one of the speakers. (donated by local police force )

My first gig was just over 5 years ago, in Flamstead Village Hall an 18th birthday for a friend, got paid £70 and free beer!

Managed to blow every power socket on the stage except one lol!

Aged 10 I gigged my nan's (second) wedding with borrowed gear... actually it was mostly my dad but I span the platters!

Got seriously into DJing at 13 after hooking up with a local DJ who needed a roadie and shortly after set up his second rig (for me!).

Went 'solo' age 15 never looked back.

Did nan's silver wedding anniversary 5 years ago :eek:

My first gig was like my first kiss...I can't remember it, so it obviously wasn't very memorable! :p

It was in 1984 (my first gig, not my first kiss!). My mate & I had just bought the gear on HP for £800 and we ran the disco between us.

I know that we charged £60 per gig in those days (split 2 ways!), but other than that I honestly cant remember ANY details of our early gigs.

Well...I can remember SOME things which have changed......for example, I think I've put my prices up since the days when I came away from a gig with £30 in my pocket!!! :D

Now around 1982, the school disco was sharply divided; Us NWOBHM headbangers on one side and the New Romantics on the other, with all the 'squares' in the middle and not really bovvered...

Ahh how we used to enjoy pounding our mates who turned up in frilly blouses and makeup...

...and rage at how they always went home with the best looking gurls... :rolleyes:

Anyway, back to the point: As everyone was coming up to 16 / 18, there were no rock discos around to be had for any money. I was asked by a DJ who was the older brother of one of my mates if I could come along and spin some of my rock LP's at his bruv / my mate's 16th party... after that one I was getting more than a few 'can you do that at mine' phone calls. A DJ was born!

Problem: no equipment. But I was playing guitar at that point and had a nice loud Marshall 2 x 12" amp combo and also had a best mate who was a bit of an electronics geek.

We scored an old record player for £2 from a secondhand shop, then took a saw to his parent's old Radiogram that had been in the barn for years... a few pence (really - it was certainly less than 3 quid we spent in total) at the local electronics shop and then into the workshop!

Using the wood from the radiogram, we mounted the two turntables, cut a slot in a bit of sheet aluminium to hold a simple slider... toggle switches either end of our 'crossfader' to start / stop the decks. My mate wired it all up to a female mono 1/4" jack output. We plugged it into the mains - it didn't explode or electrocute us... plugged it into my Marshall - it worked and sounded Not Bad At All.

First gig then was a 16th Birthday Party in March (the town in Cambs out in the Fens, not the month) Labour Hall - yes, one of our mates was a Labour councillor at the time so that was handy! Downside was that is was directly opposite the Police Station... but they just came in, asked what was going on, then went away again!

The Police got used to us fairly quickly as we had so many in there over 1982 - 84, and no bother from the local yobs as it was right opposite the cop shop.

2 decks, no cueing facility, 1 box of LP's and 2 boxes of singles, no lights.

Remember it well.

I was running a night club in Chertsey and the DJ could not turn up because of snow. We had about 200 people who did make it so I jsut spun the records. No talking in between which was novel back then, still remember the buzz of getting people on the dance floor

First every gig was when had my mates round in my bedroom lol. Got the lights and tunes going had the pool table out some juice , sweets , sausage rolls pml aw they were the days hehe.

First proper gig was my high school started doing the school events. Had some great ones.
