advice please

:bang: I've just received a letter from prs explaining about the licence to play music, can anybody help, who do i go to for this licence, prs want £1000 + vat. I thought it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than that, can anybody help:bang: :bang: :bang:

What licence, to play music how or where?

You only NEED a licence from PRS if you are the owner of the premises where music is being played. Otherwise it is a debateable point except that at all PUBLIC events where music is played SOMEONE must hold a licence. There are lots of threads and advice about this subject elsewhere on this forum.

i know all the venues that we work in must have ppl licence in order for music to be played or things to be performed etc. It just worries me slightly if they get a visit them they say right what licence does the dj have to have music on his/her laptop etc

PRS licence doesn't have anything to do with any licence regarding tracks held on a laptop.

Bit of a mood point at the moment, might be worth looking at the other threads on this subject as it's kind of been done to death. www.ppluk.com had some information but in many cases if its a private function done in a place which already has a ppl licence I don't think you really need to worry. The current laws, guidlines and suggestions are a bit on the inflexible or downright stupid side.
But saying that people on this forum are always trying to help so please search for other threads on this as there are many of them.

If you received this letter without having requested the information from them then quite likely you have been shopped by a competitor or someone who has a grievance?

This happened to me many years ago.

no its obviously related to yp ad. which i won't be renewing this year. gonna turn those walking fingers upside down a wave them back at yp. what a waste of money. thanks for the help boys and girls got my answer

Sometimes you think the only people who read the YP ads are---

Inland Revenue
Phonographic Performance
People trying to sell you products
People selling advertising
People selling calendars
Competitors testing out price levels

Im sure it must work for some people--

Don't worry I had the same letter myself, its just a standard mailshot, they are just trying to raise more revenue from the poor DJ/Entertainer, put it in bin and forget it, it only applys if you run a premisis such as a bar or club and you are putting acts in there.
