Just wondered why we all seem to be so anti-txt abbreviations on this forum ? it seems a tad hypocritical when we all use smileys which evolved out of txt language :-). I just think maybe we are making too much of the whole "dont use txt abbreviations on this site" thing, when even the moderators slip em in occasionally.

It's not discrimination asking people to use our written language!!! In fact, quite the opposite: there are plenty of people on here who may not be familiar with the abbreviations, plus we are now getting quite a few visitors from overseas. For them, English is a second language and 'txt speak' is hardly going to help them feel at home, is it?

The examples you have given (bpm, pc) are not written abbreviations of existing words, they are acronyms - which are very different.

MPG, MPH, IRA. These are correct abrieviations, that is, using the first letter of each word, not just leaving out random letters or integrating numbers. For example, the song SK8TR BOI. ( or however it was)

I think its more to do with who controlled and ruled England--why do you think theres an awful lot of French words in our language? 1066 and all that!

Text is crammed into a small space for a reason--theres only a small screen and its really harder going typing in full on a mobile ---as well as being charged per page.

E Mails have plenty of space---:D

On the business front I would say if you are corresponding over the Internet with potential customers( as we do every day ) sending out detailed quotes and information you need some kind of decent standard of English and presentation to be credible to get better quality bookings.

I personally think writing in text is very clever! As someone has mentioned, language always evolves. Words/spellings get changed and will have different meanings. So text talk gets my support in general (but on here - no! People have voiced their opinions & there are rules for us.)

However there is a time & a place for text talk. You should be able to decide if it is appropriate for the people you are talking to. For example I would have no problem using text talk to my friends but Aunties & Uncles who are considerably older, then I would not use text talk when communicating! It's the same as general talk - such as swearing & bad language and who/when to use it.

Why do we have to be nice all of the time? To be honest it really annoys me when people make no effort at all with their posts. It makes me wonder how they cope with answering e-mails and typing contracts. I certainly wouldn't consider employing anybody without a rudimentary understanding of the English language, and I'm sure that other people feel the same way.
If someone posts on here a rig photo, with wires cascading everywhere, they get slaughtered. But in reality, if that makes them think about improving the situation, then its been worthwhile.Same principle with typing - why let yourself down, for the sake of a little effort!

I understand what you're saying. BUT, it's every members responsibility to adhere to the guidlines of the site they're visiting. When I join any forum I always have a quick look through the rules to be on the safe side. The site staff are only human too, and it gets extremely frustrating at times when we constantly have to regurgitate the forum rules time and time again. In my opinion it is rude if they blatantly ignore or disregard the advice they are given. It only takes a few minutes to look through the forum rules. If all new members would do so then we wouldn't have the issue you brought up.

I am an old fart but txt spelling doesnt really bother me that much provided I can understand it. What I do hate is bad grammar and punctuation. So many times I see people write "I could of done it" on this site when they mean "I could HAVE done it". As has been said the ability of whether and when to use there, their, they're or effect and affect are far more important than someone spelling mate "m8".

It is, my point was if we allow text speak we may as well allow other languages, so that those of us that can't comprehend txt spk m8 will be on an even footing with those that can.

If those that persist inusing txt spk don't like me posting in Welsh, then why should they think it's acceptable to use something else that's not English (ie text speak).

It depends on whether it is intelligable and, as I have said, I had no idea what LOL meant but L8r was easily understood even by an old codger like me.

But could you imagine reading post after post after post on the forum if it was ALL in text language??? Irritating, to say the least and certainly not as readable as if it were written in full.

If you allow a little, you have to allow a lot, so it's far easier to just say don't use it - which the rules do.

The acronyms generally used on forums are usually just stock phrases and, even if you don't know their meaning, it doesn't prevent you comprehending the thread.
