I have just read the latest reminder about swearing and text speak posted by your good self Steve and just wondered if it would help anyone especially the newbies if we had a thread that told us what was acceptable and what was not.

eg. as I understand it :

u = you
2 = to

and not acceptable on the forum.

is it ok to use abbreviations such as :

lol = laugh out loud
imo = in my opinion

just wondered? mybe we could have a dictionary of acceptable terms and those that are text speak and not therefore accepted.

If it's a rubbish idea i apologise for wasting a thread but I just thought it may help to differentiate between the two for some people if indeed either are acceptable to use on the forum?

Not a silly idea at all, just might take a while to compile

As a rule of thumb, if something is a recognised abbreviation eg Admin,
recognised internet phrase eg LOL,
or acronym, it is acceptable.

What isn't, is swearing (including words that the auto censor picks out, self edited with asterisks but with the first & last letter left in) just use the :Censored: , it's in the smilies list if you look hard enough.

Text Speak, as has been pointed out too many times over the last week or so. eg if it's a number it's 2, if you're going somewhere it's to, with somebody else, too. If want to write out the number then use two.

& I am not your M8 (I may not even be your mate, but that's a different matter :d)

(I would also like to add miss use of They're, there & their etc etc... but I don't think I'd get away with it)

IMHO, the use of LOL, LMAO, IM(H)O etc. are widely acceptable internet slang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFO) terms, and so to disallow them in an internet forum would be, well, a bit silly really!

They are mostly acronyms, and meanings are easily guessed if you don't know them, and very easily found if you're really stuck (just follow the link above).

Text speak is different, it was devised to save characters when sending a text, and doesn't really server any purpose other than that. Personally it takes me a little longer to read as I have to decode it all first, I don't naturally read "UR" as "you're" or "your", and to be honest I don't think anybody does?

There are crossovers, generally those with numbers (2 for to or too, m8 for mate, gr8 for great, l8r for later etc.), and if there's any clarification needed then it's probably on these and nothing else.

Text speak is for texting, and internet slang is for the internet...simple really?

I find text talk incredibly annoying in these forums.

Text talk is for use with mobile phones...in order to be able to include more information without having to send two or more texts.

This is NOT a mobile phone - it's a mobile disco forum - with plenty of room for us to say what we want in proper English.

It's correct to say 'round brackets', and 'square brackets'. But if you wanted to use a single word to describe these (), it would be 'parenthesis'.

Likewise, if you wanted to describe [] with a single word, it'd be 'brackets'.
