I've recently noticed a number of people consistantly breaking forum rules - particularly with regards to bad language & text talk - but the majority of users tolerate this.

Then I come along & talk about passing a gig to a colleague because it turned out to involve more time, work & expense than I knew when I first quoted for the job - and the majority of users have jumped down my throat & described me as (quote) "pathetic" "out of order" "not having a grasp of the wedding market" (which I've been in successfully for 23 years) and similar offensive comments.

The text talk and language is dealt with everytime by moderators and admin.

I have just looked at the thread and did'nt see anyone jumping down your throat, I just think that some people were saying what they thought - i don't think any malice was intended - you just perhaps did'nt explain yourself to good on the first thread and you thought everyone was against you because they did'nt say what you wanted to hear....that's not meant in a nasty way.

Posting threads you thought you shouldn't have....yep done that, everyone has, but when you post you are asking everyone for an opinion, there own thoughts and thats what it threw up....don't worry about it...sit back have a beer.:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

To be honest, I didn't see a problem with you passing the booking on. You will find there a lot of 'righteous' attitudes on here, so at times it's best not to even mention incidents like that :)

Lets be honest here, the thread in question simply offered up honest and genuine advice and feelings. These are intended to be useful and supportive, but by there very nature will at time come across as harsh, maybe a little hurtful and even blunt.

That's generally what this forum is about. Beerfunk, nobody on here is in anyway self righteous at all. Trust me I have personal experiance of the "If you don't use Martin and Mackie then don't come in here" brigade. The most important thing you can take from this forum (in my experiance) is that you (and that most certainly includes myself) will never know everything and will always be able to learn and get better. Just read Dragon's comments.

Getting back to the thread in question, I don't mind standing tall and saying that I feel the action taken by Rob on this occasion is very very wrong. I constantly get calls from poor folk who have been let down by there DJ or have been passed to another because the guy they booked has decided to take another gig. Maybe Rob, I have only been doing this DJing lark for 22 years and entertaining at weddings for most of them, but I do now pride myself that I will never ever let a client down, that I will never ever worry a bride unless I have absolutely no other choice. If I make a mistake with my pricing, or I choose to lower my price, or god forbid, the arsey manager of a hotel won't tell me how long my microphone lead neads to be, I simply brush it off and the show goes on.

Not wanting to get involved in the thread in question, it does seem however that sometimes things slip "through the net" frequently. Whether this is due to "one rule for some, another for everyone else", or just that there aren't enough mods / admins, or that they just go unnoticed - who knows?

Take this post (http://www.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=104458&postcount=11) for example. Starred out by replacing some letters with *, but still pretty clear what is meant, and the 2nd word is particularly bad.

Compare to this thread (http://www.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=104392&postcount=1) which was picked up on. I saw it before the :Censored:s were added, and it was starred out in exactly the same way...

But maybe instead of posting this I should have used the "Report Post" icon on the offending post instead ;)

EDIT: The cynic in me has just noticed that the poster who escaped a slap on the wrist is an MDD Supporter...while the other is a relative "newbie"....:)

Ricesnaps - On your first point, the thread in question might have offered up honest & genuine advice & feelings. The trouble is that not a SINGLE reply answered the question I was asking in the original thread!.....and what you describe as "honest and genuine advice & feelings" were actually personal insults and comments which I found to be offensive.

Secondly, I'd like to state that in 23 years I've NEVER let a client down. I didn't just decide to take another booking, and never have. I had a colleague who was available to do the gig, and confirmed with the clients that they were happy for him to do it...which they were, so I passed it onto him.

If I hadn't been able to find anyone who the clients were happy with to cover the gig, I would have done it myself, because as I said, I've NEVER let a client down, and I'm not going to start now.

As I said before, we will have to agree to disagree on what was right or wrong in this situation, but one thing is certain - I don't come here to be insulted.

There definitely isn't different rules for different members. Sometimes things do slip through the net, but if brought to our attention there are acted upon (as in the first link you posted Marc).

With regards to the 'report post function'...please do, that's what it's there for :)

Sorry that you feel insulted, but knowing the very nature of forums and having run this one for a few years, I can tell you that people are generally not insulting on here, but are allowed their point of view.

People disagreed with the way you dealt with something - that's your prerogative to have an opinion and theres too.

Since Angela and I have taken over this site, we constantly strive to keep it informative, friendly and not too heavy.

We never let arguements get out of hand or allow the flaming or personal insults of other members.

Please try and see that this is a forum full of opinions and if you start a thread like yours, then you might get people posting opinions you don't really like.

Anyway, let's move on now - I think we've all had our say and no-one has meant to be nasty or insulting. :)

Sorry to disagree, but things do not slip through the net 'frequently' at all.

This is a very well run and moderated site, which is run by volunteers who cannot possibly be here 24/7.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I think it is slightly insulting to our hard working admin and mod team to say that things frequently slip through.

If you could see 'behind the scenes' and the amount of editing that Steve and Shaun in particular have been doing recently, then you'd probably have a different opinion.

The other thing is getting used to the characters on the forum some are a little more forthright than others and it's knowing how to take people and interpret what they say.

so now I take a backseat and only comment on informative or lighthearted threads.
And leave the more heated threads to those that like that sort of thing.

But isn't it the very nature of Internet forums for people to be critical?

I frequent quite a few forums & none are all "pink fluffy & cuddly" aren't we all wonderful type places (although one does seem to be getting rather sycophantic & I'm finding I spend less time there than on others).

I would much rather see honest opinions (even if they may not be exactly what you want to hear) rather than "Oh aren't you wonderful, let's slap each other's backs & have a group hug" type comments.

When you think about it, that's all they are, opinions.

I think that some of our members could do with growing a thicker skin, some (myself included) could do with being less blunt on occasion, some would do better if they weren't so bloody minded & some just need to grow up, but as you can see none of us are perfect.

However wouldn't the world be a boring place if we were all the same?

At the end of the day nobody forces anyone to join or participate on forums, but while you're here you may as well sit back & enjoy the ride, & don't take anything too much to heart.

The way I read the initial post by you in the other topic, it implied that you passed on the gig because of an issue with a mic lead (you've since clarified the situation in later posts). Darren metioned that the reason for passing on the gig (as implied in the initial post) was pathetic. There is a difference, and his (and others) comments are just an opinion. You seem to have taken a lot of the comments to heart and feel insulted, I'm sorry you feel that way, but no-one has set out to insult you. They have voiced their opinion but nothing more.

Anyways...time to move of from this subject. Glad you've decided to hang around the forum my friend...and don't sit on the back burner too much. I enjoy your posts. :) :beer1:
