Should we dress for the event ?

Hi all

just looking at some disco web sites and looked at one site looks great loads of pics etc of gigs. But time after time the dj was wearing t-shirt , jeans which were about falling off him and tranners.

Now i'm not saying hes a cowboy far from it hes out every weekend and i have spoke to some of him clients which always say hes great at his job.

But my point is should we dress up for the event or just wear anything. Do clients mind what you wear ? seems to me they dont i always wear RD's t-shirt and jeans to set-up then change for the event i.e suit , black trousers and shirt etc. But he had any old thing he could hind on lol just wondering what all you think ?.

trousers shirt and shoes should be the order of the day when on stage! you can always change when taking down or setting up equipment but think you should always dress up on stage no matter what the occasion!

Shirt, jacket, trousers, tie & shoes is my personal prefference...give a good image after all the stage is your domain - that's what i'm going for.
I also have some other clobber as back up like 70's funky jacket for any 70's records people want to hear.

I wear black trousers and black T-shirt for rigging , as soon as im set up I change either to Tux with bow tie or black suit jacket depending on event. I mainly do family weddings ,birthdays and that kind of thing. So I dress to impress. When I first started out I used to just wear black trousers , or black chinos with a smart shirt. But I found myself doing increasingly up market gigs so I started to dress to get noticed.
Think it works , i'd like to think so anyway.

Personal prefrence and 9/10 is black shirt with jeans, looks smart for the 18th/21st parties we do. Although the suit comes out on occassion for the more up-market events or where we know the guests will be in formal wear.

Heres a question for you, we're *hopefully* just about to take on a VT guy, if we're doing an event where we're in suits, do you think the VT tech should also be in this dress, considering he would only appear every now and then?

My style for weddings is black dress pants, black dress shirt and white/cream tie (never a bow-tie). Thing is that it is inobtrusive when I'm behind my equipment but bears up to closer inspection, it also means that I'm usually not as well dressed as the groom/groomsmen, but better dressed than 50+% of the male guests.

The other useful thing about this mode of dress is that the older people associate it with the Rat Pack but the younger ones think it's more of a 'Hives' thing that I have goin' on.

yep shirt and tie for kids discos...... they have mums dads older brothers , sisters etc. although has to be said I dont do really young childrens parties.

don't really dress up unless requested to- people seem more interested in the music than my fashion sense.

would never really want to have to be suited and booted for every event i do.

I ALLWAYS dress smart, shirt, tie, jacket, black trouses what ever the gig. Why should a childrens party be less importent than a wedding, you are still being paid by your clients. I think you should always dress to impress!

I have a number of piercings (some you can't see - ooer) and around 19 tribal tattoos, mainly on my arms. Whenever I have a consultation I am totally covered up and when I do a private function (not club work as it doesn't matter there), I wear a shirt and trousers and shoes. Nobody knows any different as they can't see underneath.
Unfortunately, it seems that most of the time, rightly or wrongly, first impressions do count.

depends on venue / event as to what i wear....ie 18's and kids partys anything goes, anything else shirt Trousers upto a tuxedo complete with bow tie for posh weddings and dinner dance events.....

As to the original question of 'Do the clients care?' - I'd say they do: I base this on the fact that we ask the client how they would prefer the DJ dressed for the occasion. One of the options is 'As he/she wants', which would be the obvious choice for the customer to tick if they didn't care how you were dressed. I can count on one hand the number of times that this box has been ticked.... all the rest chose an option (eg smart casual, black tie, etc). On the other extreme, fewer than many of you may think actually want the DJ in black tie either.

If i am doing a 18th, 21st, kids party or pub disco then i wear black jeans and black t-shirt which has my (old) logo telephone, and website address.

Weddings and upmarket gigs usually Black trousers and a shirt (Never a tie or god forbid a bow tie.

However due to the fact that my business is revolving and i am acting, performing more professionally and want to be taken more professionally I am now starting to wear shirt & Trousers to all gigs with exception to daytime kids parties and pub gigs.
