I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE SEEN THIS BUT I WENT TO A DISCO AT WEEKEND AS A GUEST FOR A CHANGE AND THE DJ HAD A SCROLLING SIGN WITH HIS MOBILE NUMBER ON AND YOU COULD TEXT YOUR REQUESTS OR DEDICATIONS TO HIM OR EVEN JUST A MESSAGE IT GAVE HIM LOTS OF AMUNITION FOR THE MIC WORK
TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK IM LOOKING ON EBAY FOR A SIGN AND I'VE SCROUNGED A SPARE SIM CARD :cool:

I used to use one a while back, it is good for plenty of requests, and also handy for marketing purposes too, as you have a good selection of mobile numbers that could be used to advertise your services.

Each number that sent me a request got an automatic reply of
"Thank you for your request. For more information on <disco name> please call our sales line on 0845 ... ... or text us your address and we'll send you a free brochure showing all the services we offer"

Be prepared though, you will get drunk abusive texts too, so if your easily offended it may not be the way to go, but on the upside you also tend to get a few offers from the ladies too LoL

Well i think giving your mobile number out is a good thing. Besides it helps stop the continued " can you play" all night long. Far easier for me to check my mobile. People seem to like it. Works for all ages as most people have a mobile on them these days. But i wouldnt use a Maplin sign, they are really poor

That www.djnow.co.uk don't look all that good. As soon as the person has realised they've been charged at least 50p (or even up to £1.50 if your being greedy) they will not be pleased, unless you have clear disclaimers around the room explaining this (and LED scrolling sign will be no good for long disclaimers).

Also the "All outpayments shown include VAT, you will need to supply us with a valid VAT registration number to recieve the full outpayment amount. "
So unless your VAT registered you won't be getting paid from them :bang:

Best sticking to a normal mobile number for them to text (O2 are always giving away free sim cards, and as long as you top up £10 a month you'll get 300 free texts which is plenty for reply's back to the customers. Plus this will save your main number being hounded constantly. :)

Yeah, exactly my point about the DJ SMS thing, I mentioned the disclaimers because if some joker thinks he can make money by people texting a request, it's going to result a bad image for that disco, when customers realise they're paying up to £1.50 to hear their song! They could pay & download it for that!

A normal spare sim is the way to go, and a nice LED scrolling sign, I had the £49 Maplin one, and to be honest its too cheap and tacky, and their higher end models don't display enough characters on one screen to display a mobile number, thats why I have not replaced the cheap one I had yet.

However if you are at a regular pub gig in your own local pub/s then it's a completely different call. I would not want my mobile number broadcast to people in a pub who can ring or text me at 2 in the morning for a laugh.

Like the Idea, but if you do it try and splash out on a decent scrolling sign and not the 30quid silver one from maplins because I really do think they just look absolute pants. No offence to anyone who has one, but there are much better ones there. It does look very "bedroomy".

right let me get this straight - some of you have said you don't like the idea of people having your number to call/text at 2 in the morning etc, surely if they really wanted to do that they would piuck up a business card, find you in yellow pages or look at your website (delete non applicable lol), i think the best idea is what i have, i have 3 phones, my home one, my disco mobile and my personal mobile, so using the scrolling led sign with your disco mobile number would be handy, it gets turned off at the end of your shift anyway and back on the next morning as usual so no one is gonna bother you through the night and your personal one can be left on for emergenc calls anyway :)

Yeh I did actually say you could run another phone solely for the purpose.

My siuation is I don't have web sites, advertise or dish out cards, I work locally, with my furthest job ever being about 11 miles from home. The idea of my phone number being on view for a load of drunken locals, who could get upset if I don't play their favourite hip hop track, or if I get a drunk thrown out of the pub for abusing me just does not appeal to me.

I can well imagine they could think it a great joke to call or text me at 4 in the morning requesting the song I wouldn't play them, after they've crawled out of a Bournemouth night club. Hey, haven't most of us made drunken phone calls or made 'one fingered texts' after a few beers that we've regretted the following morning! http://planetsmilies.net/freak-smiley-9430.gif

For organised events i.e weddings, retirements, birthdays etc..... probably a great idea and something I would possibly use if I were in that market. Having said that, I've often thought about getting a sign for my pub gigs I could use to put up "happy birthday to ......" or congratulations to ...... on getting married" etc.

a petrol station near me has a big bright blue led scrolling sign and it looks kool as anything if i get a chance i will try and take a video clip of it but your not supposed 2 use your phone in a petrol station but the txt a dj i like it but is there anyway i can get 5 digit short codes without going with some company
so the code is mine and it costs the punter standered network charge and only that to send a txt
