Firstly apologies, I have asked a similarquestion before, but now can't find the thread!

I have my first wedding with speaches at the end of the month. Want to buy a pair of active speakers to stand mount either side of the top table. Largish room (150 capacity). Active speakers will only be used for background music and speach. Really keen to find something small and unobtrusive but that sounds good and isn't really expensive. A lot of the gear around is the plastic moulded stuff and not sure it looks right - after all I could just use my M-Flex, but while they sound great, they are rather ugly!

Also wondered what sort of power rating you would recomend.

I have been looking at something like these:

Which have the "look" I think, but not sure they have the power

and then there's these's - but not completely certain they have the "look" and I have never heard of the make:

So, size and look is important, must be able to coap with vocals and should cost less than £200. Recomendations please?

2nd to that, I now need a 2nd Radio mic as I want to offer two. Currently use a JTS UHF. WOuld you suggest I only consider buying another JTS so the two match or could I just go for whatever I like?

I may have something for sale that would do it for you, a Kustom Profile 1 system, great for wedding speeches and a good wheel in system, nice mixer as well with effects and nice and punchy.

Thanks Paul - I take it 100 watts is enough to boost granny at a wedding?

Do you use mic stands for this sort of use and if you do, do you go for boom or floor standing and then pass the mic to the person speaking, or table stands so the speakers help themselves?

How much "involvement" do you usually have at speaches time?

Also still interested in what to do about my 2nd mic

What I want to try and do it have the mics nice and neat somewhere waiting to be used. just seems kinda scabby to just pop a radio mic on a table on it's side. A table top stand to keep the mic on until use just seems a nice idea.

So would you suggest a cheaper but similar looking JTS to go with the one I already have or something completely different?

Having looked at the DB K 70's in your first link, I think they fall SERIOUSLY short of what you will need for background music & speeches in a largish room with a capacity of 150. It seems a rating of 50 watts RMS is WAY too low, and if the dimensions quoted are correct, they can't contain anything larger than a 6" speaker, and are actually smaller than a sheet of A4 paper...my home hi fi speakers are bigger than that! I appreciate that you want something small & unobtrusive, but I think these fall very short of your minimum requirements.

Having looked at the second link you posted, I think the Box PA202A's seem far more up to the job. I know they are much larger & heavier than the DB K 70's, but they contain 12" speakers & are rated at 200 watts, which, in my opinion will be sufficient for a largish room with a capacity of 150.

In the perfect world, all disco speakers would be really small & unobtrusive, but the smaller they are, the more you sacrifice power handling & quality.

Personally, I'd rather use standard sized disco speakers that have the quality & power handling...rather than something much smaller, cheaper & lighter which do not.

See your point but wouldnt you be doing the professional bit and justify your fee:D by going up to the top table with the mike and liase with best man etc, checking when ready to start speeches and give some brief instructions on how to switch on the mike in the first place--speak close to the mike etc

Rather than the usual problem--where they pick up the mike --nothing happens---blow into it--nothing then they say errr how do switch this thing on :D all looks terribly unprofessional:eek:

That way the mike keeps "moving" amongst the speakers and is then handed back to you in a smooth professional way, providing they dont drop it:( .

I bought a lectern with two akg condenser mikes on it that i hire out for wedding speeches, the lectern can be "dressed" by the florist and then no-one has to even touch a mike, everyone can just stand up , put their notes down and just speak at ease.

Don't discount a pair of these PA110As (http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_pa110a.htm) They are considerably smaller and lighter than the PA202Asand as such would be much more discrete, as they only have a 10" driver, ideal for background music and speeches and if you have a subbass using the 120Hz cut off switches they will give a nice round sound for smaller functions allowing the sub to do the work. They are only 130watt RMS per cab, but that is still a total of 260 watts, how loud do you need your speeches?

I have owned 3 pairs of "The Box" powered speakers, (PA302A, PA502A & SB115A) they have all been very good and whilst I have downsized my outfit to fit in the car I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Maybe I didn't explain properly?

Just wondered if I should stick to JTS so I have two identical looking mics? You can get the same mic with a reciever with less frequencies for less than the one I own, so slightly cheaper mic, but still an identical looking pair of microphones.

Or would it look ok to say have one JTS and one SM58? (for sake of argument)

And the system you mentioned to me earlier - would you say it was loud enough for speaches in a large tall roof hotel?

Going totally against the entire thread, but, I think you may be better off with a Passive system.

Say you purchase a active system with an external mixer, and two wireless microphones and CD player for the background music you mentioned. You've got all of that gear at the foot of a stand holding up a speaker (and you'll also spend alot of time saying "excuse me" as you bend down at one side of the head table to alter the microphone volume). Or, if you decide you want to have it away from the guests (the mixer/mic recievers/cd player etc) you've got to have two cables running too each speaker (power and input).


Why not buy some good looking Passive speakers, an amp and everything else, and rack mount it all up (except the speakers obviously!), that way you can run one cable to each speaker (and even pair them up if appropriate), and have complete control of everything from around the corner, and not keep appearing when Granny Jones can't quite speek loud enough!

Just a suggestion, would be the route I would take.
