speakers...what you recommend for £300

hey guys just wondering whats speakers would you recommend for about £300 quid...??? i know not thats not alot of money but when on tight budget it has to do for now as just starting out.:confused:

Is this just speakers, or an amp as well? What sort of functions do you do/are going to do? How big are the venues?

looking for functions with anything from 50 to 150 i would say. speakers with amp or speakers with built in amp rather speakers with built in amp as less leads to worry about etc but if my budjet not enough for built in amp then ill just have to go with out. looking to do birthdays/weddings etc those kinda events. hope this helps.

I think this is a very unfair comment, and also an in-accurate one at that.

There are many brands that other DJs use on this forum that you could quite easily buy a pair of subs for under £300, not always a very powerful pair, but a pair none the less.

Daveyboy, I would suggest you have a look at the Class-D website, they sell very good products, at even better prices. I personally use two subs, and four tops by Class-D at most of our functions.

Contact Class-D, they are so helpful. Just tell them what you want, and if it's possible they will do it. I got a 1.5Kw PA all in for £500, and am very happy with it.

We had that system to start with, it would probably do you up to 150 people. However we added two cd158-1s to go in the middle, to pump it up that bit louder.

But you will need an amp... however if you do go for powered speakers, remember they will be heavier to put on stands and carry about --- plus if they pack up, there's no simply changing to a spare speaker or amp, you'll have to have a spare powered one!

Generally, when looking for how much power - 10 watts per person is a good start (e.g. 100 people - take 1000 watts).

I have seen these in action at Mansfield as it's only down the road from me. Someone was trying these out. Unfortunatly my budget didn't go to this but they sounded so good...oh well maybe next time..but did get the class d 158 - spot on.

up to you....if you mean issues with the amp its fine, if you mean the sound....also fine, i done have the funds to get subs yet and find my speakers kick out enough bass for most venues.

Sub are only there to reinforce the bass that the tops produce depending on how they are set up or they act as bass on a pair of small tops

Sorry for delay in replying, I got the C-mark 2450 amp, 700w per side into 4ohms. Liked the 215's best of anything, as subs and tops were going to be dearer. The simple way round the speakers not being 4ohms? As suggested by a nice man at Class-D, buy another pair!!!

All in £500 exactly, for smaller gigs, just use one pair of speakers, gives 500w per side. If you need the boost, add in the second set, 1400w rms total, eight 15" speakers, and believe me the bass output is awesome! I have now taken nearly all the bass off the mixer eq, and it may seem silly, but they seem to like being driven hard, and sound better.

I don't know if this deal would be available now, but ask about shopsoiled or ex-demo gear. All mine was brand new and boxed! I would strongly recommend a personal visit if at all possible, as they are very helpful, and have suha varied range of kit available.

I understand where your coming from very bassy cabs indeed there is no real need for subs might stick mine on the bay:cool: im sure with the subs as well it would be real overkill and be to bassy:D

CD158s have internal tophats, so no problems with tripods.

Just to clear up any possible confusion, and inject a minor note of caution: My speakers are two 15" /one mid horn/ three tweeters per cab. Obviously quite heavy, and as such can't be downsized to tops only for smaller gigs. However, since I'm not selling the Peaveys, they will now be the second set as opposed to main. If any reasonable subs come along I might still get a pair for these. A cheaper option could be a pair of similar speakers in parallel, bit less bass, but lot more sound.

It's to do with impedance.

2 x 360W@ 8Ω is the power your amp will output on a pair of 8Ω (ohm) speakers.

If you add another pair of 8Ω speakers, then the impedance halves and you will be running at 4Ω and the amp will be outputting 2 x 720W

A lot of amps are not stable at 2Ω, so be careful.

The last two figures are if you have the amp in bridge mode I assume.

That's the very basic version - I'm sure someone more technical than me will add to that or tell me I'm wrong....:o
