Which USB lead?

Now im getting into the digital side of music im trying to transfer information between my PC and Laptop.

I assume the easiest way is by USB to USB?

If so can I use a basic USB lead or do I need the more expensive one they suggested in the electrical shop which has a plastic covering metal screening and comes in a shiny box at £16-99?

Or can I get a cheap one at the holiday camp (Maplins) that works just as well?

oooo no, you can't connect 2 computers directly by USB, although there are some wink-wonks that can do it. They have a little circuit in the cable that does the business, never used one meself.
Either find one of those (Maplins probably sell them), or set up a mini network using ethernet/wireless or use a USB external disk to copy everything on to from one PC, then move it to the other and copy off.

Never been easy to directly transfer stuff from one computer to another. Network's the best way to go. USB stick may be easier.

What operating systems are the two machines running? If one is XP and the other is VISTA you can now use the new 'Easy Transfer Cable' - usb cable with a wee device that makes it easy to transfer data between the machines.

I agree with Jamie - definitely either a network cable (remember it must be crossed over if you're not going through a hub), or a portable USB storage device. The network cable is obviously more efficient, as you're not moving the data twice.

Think I will go the USB stick route for the moment---especially as I just remembered I have one:D

Alan, I would definately look into sorting out a network - once set up, it's soooo much easier to transfer files and back up.

XP is fairly easy to configure too.

I have 2 desktops and 3 laptops here and it would be a nightmare without my network.

Nope. That's an Urban Myth. Both versions are networkable :approve: , but Home can't join a domain, which is a client-server environment. Very unlikely a home user would need that functionality.

I would suggest a simple x-over ethernet cable would be your easiest solution. Remember to set the IP addresses on each computer, as there is no DHCP in a client to client network.

Another of the main differences between XP Home and XP Professional when networking is that you can only configure access control with XP Pro.

For example with XP Pro you can make a file accessible by users X and Y but not Z. This isn't possible with XP Home.
