Why all the plugs at the end? So you can switch the lights on and off individually?

Do you mean IEC Socket?

One problem with yor idea, when the lead splits from one to four, there will be no outer sheath on the 4 leads. It wouldn't pass a PAT inspection.

It doesn't look like the leads are split to me, just that they are inside another cable?

If you had a junction box at either side of the 12 core cable it would?

why have 4 plugs would it not be better doing it this way look at the RS componants website iec 6 way distrobution boards
then you only need one iec lead to power the 6 iecs

Im pretty sure you can't get a 4 x 3 core cable inside an outer sheath. 12 core is usually 12 lengths of copper wire inside 12 individual plastic sheaths inside one outer sheath
If you had a junction box at either side of the 12 core cable it would?There is no junction box in the illustration.

I'm guessing because he wants each 'way' to be individually switchable at a console.

When I first started off I had a home-made wooden contraption with half a dozen standard household white plastic single switched sockets on it. Each lighting effect could then be flicked on and off as desired.

Then I upgraded to something like THIS (http://www.djsuperstore.co.uk/item/lighting-controllers/224991-prolight-pc-08-8-way-switching-system-%A323.95).

Once I had a mix of effects the cabling became unwieldy. On my crossbar I now have a mix of 'always on' units and switched units, so I went for a couple of THESE (http://www.djsuperstore.co.uk/item/lighting-controllers/228513-prolight-transcension-show-director-%A384.99). Not the cheapest method but very elegant. Just one power and data cable up each side of the goalposts and I then made short custom-length IEC cables for all the stuff on the crossbar. Apart from helping make things tidy it cuts down on the setup time significantly.

Just for your info CJ (and anyone else a little confused) , an IDE is the cable that links drives to other drives or your motherboard in your computer. Probably best not to use IDE components for your lighting :D

the 12 core cable would be quite expensive aswell

wouldn't pass pat test becuase there is no outer sleath like Steve said. make yourself a prewired lighting rig and you trailer board like cable (7core) link all of the neutral wire up together

I think you can re-sheath them or something. As socapex does basically what he's outlined. CJ's version just isn't in modules with the socapex connections.

The big socket on the end is this (OR then female version):

Which is the socapex bit.

As you can see from the top picture, the cables are all seperated out from the socapex connection. You normally plug this into a "socapex cable" in various lengths, and then have another (different type) of spider (that's what the second image is) on the other end. It ends up as a lighting multicore cable with 18 different cores 6 (circuits) x 3 core (live, neutral, earth).

Each circuit is rated at 25A. They are very big and bulky cables when coiled. About an inch thick-ish.

Used in theatres and the like all over the country.
