i have been aproched to advertise my disco by a in a mag thats from the police about crime they say its distributed to 20,000 homes and i will be the onlt mobile dj in there a credit card size add will b 80 pounds 120 pounds for size of a beer mat and half page 180
my question is has anyone ever put an add in one of these and does it get you more work or is it a wast of time than you

Where would the first place you look for a disco?

Not in a booklet about crime I would have thought!

I got a call about this they put it in a pocket book thing and the mag or something like that for around £140 not worth it if you ask me.

Advertising - i've come to grips with this over this the past few weeks and what really works well is word of mouth, nothing better.

The other options - free adds, business cards - get walking pass them about in hotels, pubs, clubs and newsagents.

Website - I use BT Broardband Business, this gives you your domain and some software to make one...OK i know it's not brilliant but it will do for the time being - also know there are a few guys on this site that do that kinda thing......not yet but i will be knocking!!

I won't pay for advertisment just yet and maybe never.

Im taking a bold step and next year going totally internet based with my advertising with the exception of cards at gigs or anything else I can find free. I spend stupid money on advertising and its an easy trap to fall into .

Word of mouth is best but most of my enquiries now come via email id say 3 or 4 to 1 phonecall.

I read somewhere for adverts on radio - something like £2k for a 20 second ad....:eek: - will cost you stupid money and are no good unless you make stupid money back...........I'm off to buy a printing press......:p :p

Maby if you were on bbc radio 1 or so but a local station to you it would only be around £200. I had an ad on my local station for a month and it cost me £250. It would probs cost you £2k to advertise on tv.

The world and his wife are using the net now, if they cant afford or dont have access to a computer they cant afford decent priced Entertainment ( in my opinion)

The Internet appears to be browsed by individuals and Companies ranging in spending power from very low incomes to mega rich--the potential is enormous.

I completely agree.

Apart from business cards, I do all my advertising online.....on about 25-30 different websites.

Some sites offer free listings & others charge, but a single booking pays for my online advertising for an entire year!

It's started...phone call's everyday day now someone trying to sell me advertising....Yellow pages (i have a small listing in this not very exspensive), The Oll Bill Mag, Charity Shop Mag even British Gas offering me discounts as i now run a company...the list goes on...Insurance, Legal Eagles.....do these people every give up....

It's quite funny at times depending on what kind of mood i'm in i may let them do all the talking and then i say 'I've got that covered....' or some only get as far as 'Hello my name is _ and i'm from......' put phone down...:D

Depends. Asda/Morrisons - agree. Tesco, moreso. Waitrose/Sainsburys - not so.

I did a similar thing a few years ago when I was still working up north, but I personally toured the supermarkets every couple of weeks plastering their boards with cards etc.. Whilst there was a tendency to get tyre-kickers, the more upmarket the store (and the area!), the better the class of enquirer.

Given the way things are going with web enquiries increasing year on year (now over 50% even in my sleepy backwater) I don't think I'd actually pay for such a service.

Got any kids? - Nice Saturday job for them!

Fair enough, but then do you really think that people who shop in Waitrose would be booking something found on a notice board in a supermarket?

I have been in this type of thing once and once was enough it was a police station wall planner it cost some £80 for the year conversions?= None

I have had more enquires and more importantly more conversions from the Yellow Pages Free Listings than I did when I used to pay for box adverts with them

Had cards in a DIY store they work with for 2 years, and honestly got about 7 calls, from it, 5 bookings. So I personally would not use it again (luckily I was a Sales Manager for the DIY store, so didn't pay for it anyway though :D )

Its not so long ago people were ringing up and offering to get everyones web sites to high ranking on Google--GUARANTEED!

All very good if established or have a good foot in the market and if you have then well done as you have probebly earnt it with hard work running your behind off and advertising wisely...:approve:

For me - I want a piece of this action as I am (at this moment in time)chasing the next gig, don't get me wrong I know it won't come to you as that would be to easy and everyone would be doing it.....but part of getting that foot hold / established must be advertising and how to spend it wisely....seem's like catch 22 all the time..

Looking at the answers so far looks like no one likes or has had no joy over placing these kinda ads....I thought that might have been the answer but always good to ask.:)

You would be wrong to assume my new business comes from the efforts of advertising over many years in YP, sending mail Shots etc etc which I have done like everyone else for a very long time.

Mainly its from NEW enquiries from my Websites that have nothing to do with previous ads--the only advantage is the experience, knowledge and confidence you gain from that previous work over the years which may well assisit you in persuading people you are the person to book--but thats it!

That knowledge and experience can also help with how you write your Website to attract customers.

If you read stuff on here regularly you will notice that Dragonfly has opted to get out of YP and other advertising to concentrate on selling only through his Website.

Perhaps see what Ricesnaps has to say--he seems a busy kinda guy at the moment

Talking of ads--just had an email to say 147 people looked at my listing on a free site--never heard from any that I know about--

It really is all going to end in tears eventually--these kind of sites cant survive surely?

BINGO....Have been speaking to my MD....she does want to put all here eggs in one basket....

So I sad split it then half on web site and half on other bits.....what goes around comes around....I get my way in the end....:D
