Last minute DJ's

Got a call tonight from guy I gave some flyer's and buisness cards to the other week - been handing out flyer's and cards for about two weeks now trying to drum up some interest. He rang me at about 7:15pm, I also know him and he own's his own hall.
'Hi how are you doing....' I said.
'I've got this pretty bride here and the DJ has let him down....could you do it?' :eek: was first reaction.
I live in Lincoln and his place is in Gainsborough - just outside about 18 miles.

'What are they all doing now then....'
'Sitting down and :whistle: waiting for the buffet...i'll be serving about 9'ish'
'OK i'll do it' - could'nt let the little lady down now could I...:)

Got all the gear in the car and drove off - that was a nightmare, anyone and I guess most of you have done this at some point...I take my hat off to you!!!

Got there and set up - started playing music for the buffet at 9pm.
Not bad I thought. Then realised I left two case of CD's at home but fortunatly they were mostly 60's and 90's although I do try and mix the cases for such an event....:D

Got playing started with up to date....someone came over 'Do you have any Motown?' - so changed it - 10 minutes later - 'Got any 70's? - changed again - 10 more - 'Any dance?'.....:eek: what a nightmare....

Thought to myself 'can see why the DJ didn't turn up' :lol:

Next person turn up 'Got any 80's?' oh yes.....it turned everything around...no one came up after that...

At the end of the night Bride and Groom were well happy. We settled the account. They said they had a really good time and thanks for turning up.

While I was packing my gear up the owner said 'Did he settle the score'
Yes I said - he then said that he would have paid double...:eek:

I had a funny one last night too.

30th birthday party, maximum of 4 on the dancefloor all night, BUT.....
I've never seen so many people chairdancing in my life. They were all deep in conversation, but clearly enjoying the music. The birthday girl had provided a nice length & varied request list & I filled in the gaps with similar & appropriate tracks, but nobody wanted to get up. (It was quite a short gig, 7:30 - 11:30 & most people didn't turn up until gone 9, maybe lack of alcoholic intake had something to do with it?)

She was very happy at the end & thanked me most profusely on the way out & I was fed & watered all night (well watered anyway, I didn't have any of the buffet, even though it was offered).

Maximum of 4 on the dancefloor all night - you were lucky...just when i got people up someone wanted something else.

I think it was somthing to do with setting up and getting there, didn't really settle down till the last hour...then everyone up shouting more...:confused:
Left one CD player going then carried on packing up.
Not the best of set up's looked a bit scruffy...
Didn't touch the buffet and it did look nice...:)

Had a dodgy look from one of the helpers - turned out that she was the girlfriend of the other DJ - no love loss there...:p

Also had a call from the bloke who own's the place this morning offering me more work...:D :D

funny that yesturday must of been a day of djs letting people down i had my dj friend on who passes me work from time to time and asked me if i could do a gig i said yes the gig went well and the guy took my mates number so hopefully there could be more work to come i always give my mates number if i am working for him not like some djs out there who will pass there number over

I'm proud of you, you did real good!

It's a lot of hassle stepping in at such short notice, rushing out, throwin g the gear in the car. rushing a setup when everyone's sitting watching. Many assuming you are the original DJ and just late. Good once it settles down and they realise you've stepped in and saved their night. Hate seeing people's night ruined because a DJ didn't turn up. Again thought, they leave it sooo late before resigning themselves to the fact the DJ aint coming. Makes it even harder to get a replacement.

Just clarifying from the thread title - it wasn't us that never turned up! Nor does Penmare work for us - he's just practicing what we preach!

I had a cracking night and I have added some pics and an email I have just received from the birthday girl to my original topic (21st Birthday).

Well done for giving them the night they deserved and in all honesty, no matter what the DJ's excuse was for not turning up...I hope his name is mud now and he gets no bookings.
