If you are approached by a company called JAG Media of West Kingsdown in Kent to advertise in brochures they are producing I would advise against. Much to my surprise I have recently been conned into giving them a cheque for over £100, which they have cashed, for advertising in the local medical centre appointment cards. Trouble is they havent got the contract to produce them. It turns out to be a company of only 6 months formation, the phone number doesnt take incoming calls etc etc. I have lodged a complaint with trading standards and the police etc and only seek to warn others.

Sorry to hear that Theo, I avoid all offers to advertise in anything except local newspapers, Yellow Pages or well known Internet Sites--not that I do any of those nowadays.

There have been countless scams where people claim to be compiling Calendars, Local guides etc which never get printed--but they sure cash your cheque ok!

I regularly get calls of that type.

Hi Theo, must have been good, or a blonde to catch you out. Putting my serious hat on guy's, anything you agree to include YP and TL, issue a Purchase order number and write it on the paper work and give it to the rep. So on Monday you agree to a YP ad, your PO number could be 07043001. When you use a number, put it on any and everything because another very good scam is: Phone rings, hello you have an ad with us dated 12 / 10/ 2006 (can you remember), we need to check your details as we are going to print and will you pay by credit card or cheque, if you haven't got a clue ask for your PO Number - stops them dead, they can't give you one, because there isn't one. Like Theo, I get a fair few calls for "wall planners", "supermarkets" etc etc, stop if it sounds good it probably isn't, but you could be tempted (arn't we all), ask them to send you details etc to your address and or email as you can not purchase advertising without "hardcopy" - the good guys (YP / TL etc) no problems, the scammers, well don't hold your breathe. Also, I like doing the following, when you get Yellow Pages etc, and they want to email you stuff, if you have an "anything@" email, prefix with the company - [email protected] TL@mikemooreentertainments....., this has a multiple usage, 1) instantly recognise who the sender is, 2) if you start receiveing emails addressed to **@, you know they have sold the address, and take them to task. None of the above is rocket science, use it and stay safe.

Good points Mike, Its reached such a bad state that I wont even speak to people who claim to be from my credit card provider or bank--let alone flogging advertising--- I just tell them to write in and Ill have look--mainly of course they are selling INSURANCE:bang:

I have since heard from Thames Valley Police that this company have been active in their area and also from a plumbing firm called XL in the west country that they too have been conned. Be alert. Basically the deal they are selling is very good - it's just they are not the company doing it!
