Speaker Loudness

I used my Class D CD15158 http://www.class-d.com/Product.aspx?PRO=543for the first time on Friday after purchasing them a couple of weeks back. I was in a large function room and set up my two tops and two subs either side of the dance floor.

After pumping some music through them I notice the tops wasnt as loud as I would have liked. So I decided to try my RCF's Art 300 on top of the subs and wow they were loud.
Now I know some of you will say you get what you pay for but what I would like to know is, my speaker set up is 1400 watts RMS but didnt seem like it was pumping this out.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is or do I need more amp power?

In a word, Piezos.

Also, 94db efficiency is extremely low for a mobile system.

What is Piezos Jamie? and how come other Class D user say there systems are really loud for the price? Dont get me wrong I love my sound now but only because I added my RCF's to them....

Did you add the RCF's in parallel to the Class D's? If so, you will have halved the resistance (8 Ohm + 8 Ohm in parallel = 4 Ohms) and hence doubled your amp's power output.

Piezo's are the little round ones at the top that give you the treble...

i would say more amp power i use the same system but with two amps and an external crossover and i never really push it that hard. your amp needs to be ideally 2 x 700 watts rms per side into a 4 ohm load to get anything out of it i use twwice the speaker rating to avoid clipping.

out of interest what amp (or amps) are you using? whats there output? are you running off one amp to the bins then to the tops?

How do you connect them up at the moment if you don't have a crossover? Assuming you daisy chain the two amps, the tops probably have a full frequency signal. It is the low frequencies (bass) that sap the power so by using the active crossover so they just receive the higher frequencies will give an increase in volume.

To a certain extent you have answered your own question when you used the RCF's. They are more efficient speakers and sounded louder. I also agree with the previous comment about Piezo tweeters. I used to have Piezo's but now only use compression drivers. The difference is remarkable especially at higher volumes.

The amps you have, I would use the Yamaha for the bass bins and the Peavy for the tops.

Thanks for the feedback guys it has helped. At present I have only used the speakers once and have been using the Yamaha amp to run all speakers as the bassin bin as a crossover built in. I have got an active crossover coming any day now so may need some help wiring it all together.

you will see a huge improvement when you use both amps, wiring it together you no where to come and find us to get you up and running ;)

The speakers you have bought are the ones I wanted, BUT they run at 8ohms, which cuts down available power from your amp.As stated by other folk they are fairly inefficient speakers, so need as much power as possible to give the required volume. That is why I got two pairs of the 215's, thus giving four ohms and more power.
The suggestion from Class-D to this problem is interesting, and they are now selling packages of this type:- Run your amp into a set of fullrange 15" speakers, and a pair of 15" subs in parallel, to give 4ohms, and max power. Then run a set of 12" tops from the sub output for more top end.
