I am a partner in a lighting / sound hire company, and also a freelance lighting tech. Have done a few jobs in Theatre, but mainly corporate and concert shows.

I work in theatre about 10 times a year (not including school stuff - I'm theatre tech at the school I studied, now working)

Normally play the role of LD or Chief LX. Did some stage managment last year, but nah not for me.

Our theatre is hopefully raising the roof in 2008 to get even bigger productions in.. which should be fun.

TBH mate, nothing is "below me" I do my fair share of lifting, hanging cloths. Infact I'm normally the one 18ft up in the air on the tallescope hanging a up scaff bar!

Like I said done a bit of Stage manager-ing, did Annie last year (was an ASM), then I did Panto for a local company as SM (not the book, but on stage). Haven't done alot of LD-ing, however last week I did into the Woods, was very impressed with myself lighting wise, I also played the role of Tech Manager and pre-arranged all the set, and everything technical. I did an overnight get in rigging, geling, then had to focus with a couple of idiots pushing me around on the scope, another with the riggers remote "OI, love NEXT, REM DIM!" ;)

Then obviously the plotting is the sitting in the chair easy bit.

You'll work your way up, just be sensible, don't try too hard to be cool, have a laugh, but not too much of a laugh and you'll earn respect. If you don't know something, feel free to ask, you can always cover it up by saying "I just can't remember" - or do a Google when you get home.

Oh - and I've followspotted a fair few times, so everyone has to start somewhere my friend....

Into the Woods Piccie....

We actually took our own f/spot in for Into the Woods, also took in some Quartets with a 15-40 degree beam angle for some extra gobo-age.

Wow, this takes me back!

Started life working in theatre, both school and local town theatre. I generally did the PA side of things rather than the lighting, worked with some great guys back in those days - late 80's when it was really cool to use Bose! Did loads of great stuff with John (the sound engineer), from youth theatre right through to pro gigs - Helen shapero, Sir Humphry Littleton, Etc... Really really good way to get into the industry. I always planned to move into radio (sound engineer), but it is a really really hard profession to break into (especially as I decided i wanted the BBC or nothing!).

Still it was fun working with the guys i did. Especially when I started DJing and could every now and then borrow some gear - remember taking a 12 foot speaker stack to on of my primary school gigs. Those were the days!

Are we getting a bit excited Sam? lol.

I'm back in the theatre this week, I've designed "See How They Run", just finished computerising the rig plan.Simple 3 colour wash, couple of window gobos and abit of random Lee156 (Chocolate).

And of course I will be finding some way, shape or form to integrate the theatre's Mac 500s.

Funny how they stopped charging for use of the 500's... great fun to play with though...
