Can anyone explain this?

Through force of habit, I've always used Doughty speaker stands.

I've just replaced my old stands after many years, and something occurred to me.....

.....why do Doughty stands use 38mm poles, when virtually all speaker top hats are 35mm, meaning you can't use the stands unless you spend another £40 - £45 on a pair of adaptors?

Any ideas?

You can get small rubber insert type adapters for them for a couple of quid! You need to shop about a bit more Rob!

Or you could buy a 38mm top hat for each speaker for under a tenner each, and just replace the 35mm ones!

I use Doughty stands, so I also use the doughty adaptors, which I believe are steel...and a pair cost me £45 including delivery.

Its probably so they can make more money selling the adaptors for £45!!!

All rubber inserts do is make the thickness of the stand up. There's no safety issue there Rob.

Why on earth you'd want to pay £45 just because they have Doughty written on them is beyond me!

Hang on, I've got this the wrong way round - I was thinking the other way round, that the stands were smaller than the top hats, hence my post.

But I think the answer to your first question is most definitly to make money, on John, Bob and Fred having to buy X, Y or Z adapter/top hat to make them fit a speaker.

You're right on both counts.

I recently tried a pair of those black aluminium stands for about £50, but they were toilet...they would bend & the knobs were very poor quality.

Thats why I went back to the Doughty ones. They might cost about £150 including adaptors & delivery, but you get what you pay for...and my last Doughty stands lasted about 15 years!

I guess you're right about the answer to my original question being to make money. No problem, my new stands should last until well after I retire!

Warrior L300s...which have no scope to fit 38mm adaptors...not that it's a problem any more, as I have my new Doughty stands & adaptors now!
