WHY you ask

Well lets be honest The NADJ has yet to represent the industry as a whole via watch dog (ie send a member to sit on the programme and disclaim the likes of A+ lets say no more) I could have mentioned the MDA or SEDA or even the MDJOL or the newly founded DJA anyone could have represented the industry on behalf of all of us DJ's Disco's if voted in on a yearly basis for example...

But lets face facts the industry as a whole has no voice and when the likes of Gary glitter, and a few choice phedo dj's whom I will not mention have disgraced our industry, or even pop stars like george micheal or boy george whom continually bad mouth the music industry with their antics. Just where? is our mouth piece to actually give us a voice of reason

Is it not time we DJ's had an official representative

Please note Im not offering my services but as a forum piece its worth a debate

The NADJ and SEDA are the voice of the industry SEDA on a local level and NADJ on a national level.

How do you know we had nothing to do with the watchdog thing? Correct answer is you don't.

The NADJ chairman Phil Cunnington is also the chairman of the LWP who are made up from people from both NADJ & SEDA (which includes this forums co owner Darren Thomas) have spent the last 18 months campaigning for fairer licensing.

Our former chairman Derek spent many a weekend advising people like entertainment agents and wedding planners about the benefits of booking professional DJ's in particular NADJ members.

You name a way you want us to represent you as a DJ, all be it one who does not want to put his hand in his pocket and join and we will do it. This will be done in a way that benefits our members the most as ultimately that is who we represent.

I fail to see how people like George Michael have given DJ's a bad name, we don't work in the music industry we just play music made by the music industry.

What has given the DJ industry a bad name is dodgy DJ's continuing to perpetuate the public opinion that we are all like smashy and nicey or that we don't turn up and if we do it is with poor quality dangerous equipment.

I notice that you say you are not offering your services, I think that says it all you will happily start a negative and contentious thread on a forum hiding behind a keyboard but when it comes to real world action you simply are not up to it.

Sorry, but I think your missing something here.

Starting at the bottom and working up - DJ's do have representation, if you belong to any of the following, they are your representitives, NADJ, SEDA, MU, EQUITY, BECTU - They all represent THEIR members.

You mention Gary Glitter et al, it's not just our industry, try thinking of some MP's for starters - There are "bad apples" in every job going.

At the top you site the gentleman that can't reply, what the 'ell do you expect us to do about it - He is an agent, report him to the DTI, they can do something, as can trading standards, OFT and probably the Fraud Squad, but it is down to them, not us.

I understand your frustration, but sometimes you have to let the wheels of the system take their time and achieve the right outcome, or you could adopt the American system of string 'em up by the testi's, then worry about being guilty or inoccent later - I know which I prefer.

Indeed. As i've said (many times) before Badger, stop worrying about other people and get on with the marketing of your own services.

Reference to George micheal - Non acceptable behaviour like driving under the influence of drugs , lewid behaviour in public loos hardly a role model to the music we play

likewise gary glitter - phedopilia activities

and boy george - Drugs again

all above onetime role models. Yes we play their music but when do we stop promoting them or even have a way of voicing disapproval of what they have done

I am marketing my own services. Im not worried about other people within my industry.

But am getting fed up of the continued bad influences of people. whom expect us to promote their material. When all we here is the likes of peter doherty continually getting away with murder Wording it politely as one can LOL. I have a daughter only 3, but she could end-up in a society where everything wrong is cool?

Is it not a time where we had one voice whom could put them to shame say in an MP for Entertainment & Music would it be so hard for someone to actually condemn these idiots whom never seemed to learn even be able to ban the sales of there music as a punishment for a limited time. Prehaps even to jail a few just as an example for the youth of tomorrow to learn to behave and not copy there role models???

Well as long as people still request and dance to George Michael then i think thats where our job ends.

We're DJs.. and there are associations with voices for us, what you're loooking for is something very different, and not really related at all.

Nathan Fleming
11-05-2007, 12:53 PM
You can look to any proffesion and there will be good and bad role models.

If you wish to display your disaproval of such figure by boycotting their music then feel free.

I still fail to see how this has anything to do with DJ associations.

In the regards to us yes its down to our own discression, but we CAN voice our disgust at the way the industries stars behave to our relevant associations. Whom the could pass it onto OUR voice as to put it......

So it can be related in a good line of communicatio refering to what someone said earlier within the thread prehaps there should be an OFFJOCK whom we could go to ???????

Nathan Fleming

So can you just clarify this for me, do you want the DJA's to focus on iradicating bad role models from the music industry.

Could we not be doing something that directly affects our industry instead?

I also fail to see the relevance of this to the topic of this thread.

I'm gobsmacked, what on earth has Boy George, George Michael and Pete Docherty got to do with 'A national voice'. Its nonsense like this that makes me want to log out. Since when did mobile dj's become the moral guardians of the music industry. Get a grip. All this campaign for clean lyrics and now lets not play music by people who take drugs and are bad drivers is getting beyond a joke.
Hmm lets see? looks like we should just turn up and hum a tune of our own composition. What next? I don't like their politics religion or race?

Prehaps if we had a way of showing our voice of disgust about the bad behavior of Pop stars or Role Model Figures ie making them take the rap for it with proper prison sentences as to set an example for the next generation of youth

Current bad icons of pop being

george micheal - driving under the influence of drugs
Micheal doherty - breaking parole conditions
a member of a girls group assulting a club goer cant remember which

Its about time they acted like role models rather than complete prats just because they are rich from the industry its always a small few every time

Who will protet the kids against negative role models or bad influences in:

Football
Royal Family
Modelling
Governement
Violent television, films and video games
Food

Let's face it people should be able to let their hair down and as long as what they do does not directly affect anyone else what is the harm.

You can shield kids from drink, drugs and sex but people will always experiment with things it's a way of finding out who you are and if they want to they will gain access to such things no matter what you do.

What was the first thing you did as a child when someone said don't do something?

But look how rich they are, it's all image, all ways has been, all ways will. Look at the ripping Billy Hayley had, and that was for just playing R 'n' R. Look at the late 1800's, musicians and Opium go together. The roaring 20's with Jazz muso's and Flappers.

The "entertainment" industry survives on that type of behaviour, it would probably collapse without it.

Who the hell is Michael Doherty anyway? Pete Doherty is a fairly pathetic figure who I understand is trying to sort out a very nasty drug habit. I believe you will find that while on one hand he has behaved very foolishly and done himself a lot of damage, he is extremely clever bloke with a brilliant grasp of the English language. He has also inspired countless 'youths' up and down the country to pick up a guitar and have a bash at writing their own tunes. It could be argued that the current surge in guitar based rock that we are enjoying the fruits of are largely because of their's and The Stroke's influential first albums. As far as I know its not obligatory for them all to be drugged up, asbo breaking louts. He certainly isn't the first and he wont be the last 'pop star' who's drug and drinking habit has been a large influence on the unique quality of their work. In fact I would struggle to think more than a few who have. With regards to Mr Michael, as most of his fans are women of an age where they should know better, then I don't really fear for the collapse of civilization yet. Although I could speculate on women's driving skills, however that would be dumb and put me firmly in the same camp as those with the limited view point I find so irritating.

Regarding the campaign for radio edits. Whether you have a version with a bleep over the offending word or not, the songs sentiment or message remains the same. I avoid playing records like 'Dont Cha' at functions with kids in attendance, if its requested (which it usually is) I find the sight of youngsters dancing to it slightly uncomfortable. That's because songs lyrics are of an adult nature, no mater what you do to it. Dada's Lollipop is another one. There are no expletives in the song but its plain as day what they are talking about and it ain't sucking on a Mivi. I admit it is difficult and it seems that over the years there has been an increasing number of songs that feature 'in your face swearing'. I think though that there are a couple of questions that should be asked.
A) are we being hypocritical about playing music that has an individual word cut but leaving the meaning quite clear.
B)If its not OK to play songs with offensive words, why is it Ok to play songs with obvious double meanings (who's been playing Scootch, coz I aint)
C)If we are starting down a road of moral guardianship where does it stop. Do we start looking at all the music we play to ensure that it contains no references to sex or violence, explicit or hidden. If so then first on my list is Rod Stewart's 'Tonight's the Night'

I wonder if you watched Parkinson last night?

He interviewed George Micheal and it was in my opinion a great interview and a great exampkle to the general public.

Now I haven't seen any of the news articles or read about the problems he's had, but he certainly didn't come accross as an unhinged or damaged individual, quite the oposite. He DID make it clear that there were things he had done that he was ashamed of and he DID suggest that he felt these were wrong. He also made it clear that there were things he had done which he believed in passionately and continued to fight the cause. While it may be wronmg or illegal in this country, he did make a big play on the abuse of alcohol (our legal drug) compaired to the resulting effects of using his particular drug of choice!
I think Mr Micheal is a bad example for this thread personally.
