Had a gig on saturday night....by 12.30 when i finally got home i was not in a good mood.

I should explain that it was a formal dance organised by some friends in my yeargroup, so i had no problems with doing the gig and helping as much as i can.

So it started.....

I was told we had the hall from 3, so being an awquard time i did nothing all day, as i wanted to be prepared (and plus what can you do between getting up and 1?). Arrived on time, and ended up sitting there for 40 mins or so, couldn't get in contact with anyone. When someone finally turned up they said that it was re-arranged at the last minute. So with no appology or anything i set about moving chairs and staging trying to arrange a suitable area to set up.

The band that i was also supposed to PA for turned up 15 mins before the gig started YAY!! :( ....need i say more

Throughout the gig i had huge problems being the age where there is a huge contrast in tastes.......trying to balance chart music with Rock/Emo :( :(

By the end of it due to some kind of confusion i got payed 25 instead of the £35 i was expecting....even though it was such a pittiful rate to start with.....due to them being my schoolfriends.

Then to top it all off i had a row of parents of the girls who organised it asking me when i would finish packing up etc etc. (they obviously wanted to get home quickly)

Ended the night with few thanks and on a real LOW

To which end......if they ask me to do another (this was the second they had organised) it will be full rate (for me £50-80).

Looks like they will loose out.

What ar your thoughts.

If you're asked to do it again and/or any other jobs, confirm all the details (price, set up times, etc) in writing. Might save you a bit of heartache in the future.:D

My thoughts are that if you charged them £35, that's barely more than nothing.

As you've already done them one amazing deal, I'd strongly advise you to charge your full rate in future.

If they won't pay that, I'd refuse the gig...unless you can honestly say you're happy working for £35.

It's hard with friends, especially at a young age. You need to stand your ground and say this is my business, issue them with a contract stating that.

I would also charge them £100 next time, to make up for lost fees this time. If they question why its more than last time, explain they underpaid you, and since then your show and you have both improved, and that your price reflexs that.

Your not paid to move chairs and staging blocks either!

as already said £100 is still a very reduced rate for your friends if you told them to get stuffed theyd end up paying more than that for an unknown quantity..
