Bulk cable for DMX leads

Want to make up some custom length DMX leads... can anyone tell me the best (within ££ reason) type and place to buy bulk cable? At least a 50m spool maybe 100m.

I've had a poke around the Thomann and Farnell websites and gotten very confused about the choice available!

Thomann sell bulk for like 80p a metre - so how come I can buy two 20metre DMX leads on fleabay with connectors and delivery for £20? Is this a cheaper way to do it I wonder? Then just cut to length and add connectors as needed?

To be honest, in a disco environment you can get away with mic cable. I think its something like over 40m runs until you'll encounter a problem.

Thank guys. Short runs only. Sick of trying to tiewrap and disguise the 3m or 6m leads that come with fixtures that are only a foot apart on the rig!

Maybe a couple of longer ones max 10m.

To be honest, I wouldn't consider microphone cable as it has the wrong ohm-age. DMX cable should be rated at around the 110 Ohm area. It can be risky using Mic cable (not that i haven't done it) as DMX is a dodgy protocol as it is, it's very unstable and feeding it through a tonne of mic cable won't help your cause.

That said, it probably will work, but you may find the cables stop working as DMX cables (but will work as mic cables) sooner than a DMX cable.

Oh and I'd suggest the Neutrik connectors, far nicer to work with :)
