3 way speakers

Hi all, just been given some HUGE 3way speakers. I think they're Goodmans.

There are a 12 inch an 8 inch and a lil tweeter thingy in each.

The spec says 200 watts each but i don't know if thats RMS or not....not that that matters because both of the 8 and 12 inches are nackered.....so i need to replace them.

They are too big for regular use so i will probabily end up selling them (once i have had fun playing with them), am i better to just sell them as cabs or spend the money on new cones?

Am i worth finding the exact replacements or will anything doo...quality dependant..........and what about ohmage, if i buy 8 ohm cones it will be fine to parallel them to be 4ohms, but surely this little tweeter will alter that number.

ANy suggestions on where to get some second hand cones....any good makes to use.

the bass and midrange tweeter are probably 8 ohms each so they offer an impedence of 4 ohms to the amp. The tweeter is likely to be a piezo so its impedence can be ignnored.
Maplins sell all types of replacement cones and may be worth checking.

If there is an internal crossover then even with the 12" and 8" being 8 ohms, the crossover will balance the impedance and still make the cab 8 ohms.

It will be a bit hit and miss if you bung any replacement speaker in. They may sound okay, but they may not! You need to know the Thielle Small Parameters to work out a good match.

If they are 200w, I would look for a 12" in the 125w to 150w range and an 8" in the 50w to 75w range.

Agreed, speaker drivers need to have the box tuned to stop the driver from over excursion and the box needs to be a certain internal volume for the cones to work properly.

What does the tweeter look like?

Yes it does have a crossover.

So i assume because of the crossover i couldn't load it with any higher wattage than 200....in which case i have no use for them ......so is it worth just selling them now (will they be worth anything) or should i load new drivers and then sell thm (will they be worth anything then).

They bring back memories :-) back in the 70's I started off with a pair of 120w 3 way Goodman speakers powered by a 80w NAD amp.

They look like Polymer speakers (black shiny cones). Is the bit for the 12" speaker partitioned off internally as the air pressure from it moving would wreck the midrange speaker (midrange used to have a solid back if the cab was not internally partitioned)?

Using higher wattage speakers would probably sound pretty naff as there isn't the internal volume (area) to cope with it. You would also have to change the crossover for one that would handle the higher power which would cause another problem i.e. working out the best crossover frequency.

At the end of the day, they are hi-fi speakers and with the advancement of speaker design, a £50 pair of bookshelf speakers would probably sound better if you were going to use them for home use.

I'm afraid I don't think they have any value. Goodman were a budget range and you can get pretty decent bookshelf speakers cheaply that would out perform them.
