In this day and age, you don't leave young kids alone, full stop. I was in Asda the otehr day, and I heard two tannoy announcements that there was a lost child in store, within the space of half an hour.
You would think that parents would be even more aware after reading about Madeleine that in the newspapers. OK, a supermarket is a bit safer, but you simply shouldn't take chances..

What tosh!!!
Do you have kids?
What do we do wrap them up in cotton wool?. Its the perverts who are at fault not the parents. What makes you think an hotel crech being run by strangers would be a good idea.
My son plays in the front garden secured by a gate, but even that leaves him open to a car pulling up and snatching him.
I feel your comment is totally bang out of order. I,m sure as parents they took the best care possible of their children.
These things happen i,m affraid. Wrong place at the wrong time. Please devote your time to the weird so called Human beings that do such awfull things. NOT the parents.

Totaly agree! Instead of going on about how the parents and they should have not left them alone gets us no where we need to think about getting her back not whats happend. If the parents thought it was the best thing to do then leave it you may think it was wrong but i dont see anything wrong with it.

I have kids and I have to say on the parents it is appalling we are not talking about wrapping them up in cotton wool or watching them 24/7 we are talking about parents leaving 2 2 year olds and a 3 year old in a locked building unattended in a foreign country .... take away the pervert risk what about fire etc . Just give your 3 year old mums curling tongs to play with or a nice fresh cup of dads aftershave if they wake up and are thirsty .
if this family was unemployed uneducated and chavvy from the local council estate we'd all be saying what disgraceful parents they were and on a witch hunt but because they are well respected middle class doctors its all such a shame?
I think what has happened is a terrible aweful despicable thing and I truly hope they find that little girl safe and well and reunite her with those that love her. But as a father and parent and former teaching assistant when it is all over I do hope serious questions are asked of the parents.
and at 9 and 6 my children are not permitted to play in the front garden for the very reason stated. our back gate has 4 locks and is 6ft plus high.
not critisizing how anyone else raises their kids but as a TA for 6 years saw too many aweful things such as 8 year olds used as drug runners and 8 year olds selling drugs not to mention countless abuse cases.

as far as I'm aware Steve the complex runs a child minding service which they opted not to take????? only going on news reports , Really don't believe anyone deserves what those poor people are going through and can't even imagine the heart ache ...... but that does not detract from the total irresponsibility of the act its self.

I'm sorry & I know it probably sounds harsh, but I have absolutely zero sympathy for them. Shagwits!

Very sad.
Lets hope you never have to go through it!
Even if you sat in the room all week with them, a time would come throughout that childs life when mummy and daddy would not be holding their hand.
Do we take away childhood from kids?
I,m sorry but to blames the Parents is a feeling of ones own guilt thinking that could have been me.

All i can say further on this is that, If a sick pervert is watching your every move. A time will come when your child becomes easy pray. It takes seconds to snatch a kid.
Next people who blame the parents will be saying that a Girl/Woman that dresses sexy deserves to be Raped.
And a warning to those with children. You may just have a sick perverted person in your street. Lock your wife and kids up.

Well said all the more reason to not leave young children unattended especially not if you are leaving the building for any length of time. Sadly this world is extremely dangerous for children these days and yes an important part of growing up is learning to stand on your own two feet and taking ... calculated risks always minimizing the potential for mishaps ........ but falling over and scraping a knee is a little different to being left in charge of a house.

So you would trust a holiday complex to child mind your kids. Somewhere you have never been before, people you have never seen before, in a foreign country?
Or you would stay in the hotel room 24/7 to watch over your kids.
Sorry but when those parents put their kids to bed, they never thought in a million years this would be the outcome.
Any parent puts their kids at risk some point in their lives, it cannot be avoided. But we never think in our wildes dreams this could happen, and thank god it is very rare for it to happen.

no id leave them totally on their own as thats a much more responsible course of action , yes admittedly there are risks in arranging child care but im sure you will agree slightly less than with abandonment! To answer your question no i wouldnt leave my kids with the holiday babysitting service , I brought them into the world well actually i didnt they are step kids but they are my responsibility.
when we go on holiday we go out as a whole family and when the kids have had enough its back to the apartment/room and they go to bed and me and the wife will sit and open a bottle of wine .
boring life .... yes ...... but we have two children to take responsibility for they didnt ask to be born and I would not like to be in the position that these poor people are. True fact is that if you CHOOSE to have children then unles you are very lucky ......you time stops or is greatly reduced they come first yes 24/7.

Well what can i say.
Parents have a life too.
So you walk your kids to school, you attend any party they go to, you watch over them as they sleep, you put harnesses on them as you shop, you basically prevent them from having a life.
Its the sick perverts at fault NOT the parents.
I pray this never happens to you in any way what so ever, other wise people may conclude you are a poor STEP parent.
How on earth anyone concludes the parents are at fault for mentally retarded individuals in our society baffles me!

I have to say that the parents are at fault in this instance, but it doesn't help matters in saying so. I also fear it may be too late, as normally situations like this are resolved within a week or so when they have great publicity. I do hope I'm wrong.
Also, the thread is called 'Madeleine McCann', so it's never strayed off topic - if the thread had been titled more specifically, then fair enough, it's gone off topic.
Regardless, it is a good idea to try to raise publicity outisde of the UK - I don't see what difference it will make within the UK, as she is almost certainly not here.

To be honest, I've read your replies to everyone else on this thread, and you seem to be a bit over-defensive of anyone so much as hinting at criticising any parents. I understand what you're saying, and you're right, you can't bubble-wrap kids away from everything. That doesn't mean to say that the parents lose any responsibility though, in situations such as these.
I don't see the relevence of my having children or not? Are you going to say "you don't have children, so you don't know what you're talking about"? Sometimes an outside perspective is clearer.
Marc, I understand what you're saying, but this thread was inevitably going to evolve into a discussion about what has happened to this girl.

I,m going to say , wait until you do, then you will realize 24/7 protection is a mith and totally not possible.
I end with... Blame the twisted perverts in this world. NOT the parents who try their best for their kids!!!!
How many kids lose their lives in car accidents while playing outside, knocked down on the way home from school etc. Are the Parents still to blame, after all if they were locked in the family room they would have been safe.
And yes, i am a bit over-defensive of anyone so much as hinting at criticising any parents because it is a difficult job at the best of times. And to listen to people critizie this poor family makes me sick.

The family left a 3 year old daughter alone, unsupervised. You don't see anything wrong with that? I'm not sure about over there, but I'm sure we all know it is a criminal offence to do that in the UK.

Check out the law more carefully. They actually broke no UK law.
FROM the NSPCC
Leaving children at home alone
What the law says
The law does not set a minimum age at which children can be left alone. However, it is an offence to leave a child alone when doing so puts him or her at risk.
How do you decide if you can safely leave a child alone?
There are many important things to consider before you decide to leave a child alone. These include:
the age of the child
the child's level of maturity and understanding
the place where child will be left
how long the child will be left alone, and how often
whether or not there are any other children alone with the child.
For example, most parents would think it's OK to leave a 16-year-old alone for the evening, but to leave them for a week would be unacceptable.
Many young children play outdoors with other children without suppervision but most people would agree that this is an important part of growing up.
You are the best judge of your child's level of maturity and responsibility. Read our "Home alone" information leaflet for more information:
http://www.nspcc.org.uk/helpandadvice/publications/leaflets/homealone_pdf_wdf36243.pdf
The parents checked on them every half hour sitting yards from the room.
They therefore broke no laws.

My heart goes out to the McCann family. Whether they left the child unnatended or not, no-one deserves to go through the kind of hell that they are going through just now. I'm sure no-one wishes more than them that they hadn't left her alone that evening, I'm sure they'll go through a living hell every day for the rest of there lives if Madeleine isn't found alive and well.
My prayers are with the family....

No, you are right, it seems to be a common myth that children must be supervised by law.
It is irrelevent in this case anyway, as they are paying an unimaginably higher price than any fine or sentence. Hopefully there will be some good news this week.

As a father to three children (Which qualifies me to speak) I agree firstly that the evil twisted perverts etc are to blame first & foremost. I also feel that the parents could have minimised this risk by perhaps dining on thier own balcony as My wife & i did in October last year when we were on holiday, rather than 500/600 yards away where the view was seperated by bushes & trees, this was totally irrisponsible of the parents. I agree you cannot watch kids 24/7, and i don't think anyone (parent or non-parent) is saying that however like we do with Disco's you need to do a risk assessment and minimise any potential dangers.
lets pray for little maddie and hope that she is found safe, however i do have one other thing to say - which may upset people and i am not saying this to upset anyone, i would like to know opionions only, why is there so much media attention to this individual case? Why such a large reward? Children go missing everyday, wether kidnapped, run away, murdered etc yet there is not as much attention to them, i mean in Africa alone a minimum of 3 children a day are kidnapped....as i say its a horrible thing thats happened to maddie, but why?

Mr Thames Valley Disco, whilst I understand what you are saying, and can even agree with it to an extent, I feel you are either missing the point, or chosing to ignore the issue.
First, the credentials, my son is three in late July and my daughter is one on Wednesday.
No, you are of course right, you can't look out for your kids 24/7 all of their lives, but how much you don't watch them and the degrees of associated risk absolutely must be considered, moreso at two than at 12, and so on...
No, you can't be guaranteed that a child is safe in a creche, but with multiple people all watching each other and, in all likelihood these days, CCTV watching them, the degree of risk involved is very, very low. (and how long would a hotel stay in business with a publicised child abduction case at their creche?)
By comparison a two year old alone in a hotel room could get into...
a) kitchenette drawer and play with knives
b) help themselves to the mini bar
c) fall out a window, or off the planter box and over the balcony railing
d) heck, even falling off the bed onto a low side-table could be fatal
e) try to go to the toilet like mummy and daddy, slip and drown
Note, no mention of paedophiles or the content of mummy and daddy's luggage even mentioned. My son could open most doors by the age of two including quite complex latches, sometimes emptying his toy box out so he can stand on it to open the high door handle in his bedroom.
As to whether they broke any laws or were in the right or whether we should blame paedophiles... c'mon, be realistic, we know that paedophiles and child abductions for other reasons are a risk, more so in a foreign country, unsupervised, that's a given. Sure we can blame the paedophile(s) but that doesn't bring the child back, that's akin to walking out onto a zebra crossing when a car is hurtling towards you and expecting the law to protect you from being killed, yes, the car should have stopped for the pedestrian already on the crossing, but being right doesn't make you less dead.
I feel nothing but sympathy for the McCann's, and I wouldn't say that by their actions they deserve it, but it is certainly by their (in)actions that this was able to happen, and that is something that they will have to live with.

Well i have three children all under 4 years old. I can say without doubt that at some point in their life they will be vulnerable to paedophiles.
Why?
Because no matter how much i protect them and look out for them, paedophiles will always be a threat. It takes 1 minute of lapse on my part for the same thing to happen to me.
Anyone who feels they are not at threat is fooling themselves no matter how good your parent skills are.
Would i be Criticised and have no symathy like some of you have lack of for the mccanns.
This is very rare hence the News coverage, but wrong place wrong time it could happen to any Parent.
paedophiles should be hung no question. Scum of the earth.
The thought of what may have happened to that little girl makes me physically ill.
How anyone can blame her parents also sickens me.

OK, in order...
Media Attention? Because the parents are reasonably wealthy, educated and white, and the girl is pretty... Jon-Benet Ramsay anyone?
Large Reward? Because the parents can afford it, see above.
Children Go Missing Everyday? See above.
Africa? More than three kids go missing from Disneyland on any given day, in Africa it will be thousands, not three.

As the case was racially motivated at a time when that sort of attack and the seriousness of it were big news and not daily occurances in Manchester , London and the likes and to be honest I don't believe personally that that particular case had anywhere near the global coverage that the mccann case has or for nearly the length of time.
It has maintained a level of media coverage for many years due mainly to the monumental stuff ups by the justice system however this is off topic and reall what is being discussed is kids home alone
oh and for the record the above case a boy was murdered not kidnapped if you would like to compare cases milly dowler , soham both abductions . only boy I can remember was James Bulger who again IMO got nowhere near the coverage of the others.

James Bulger did receive media attention up to the point he was found.
This little girl is still missing.
friends/Familly in the UK are keeping this in the news with their hard work. after all even this forum is talking about it.
Good on them.

So do i assume then that if the parents were not wealthy & perhaps dropped out of high school then tough cookie? If so then i hope that neither of my kids or many of our friends kids go missing. As I said I have sympathy here, however if its good enough to give so much media attention etc to one little girl then it should be the same for ALL children regardless if thier parents are wealthy or educated, as someone else noted earlier in this thread, children do not ask to be born.

Absolutely. But you'd need an entire channel devoted to it, which would have the opposite effect to what was desired.
Seriously, lots of kids go missing everyday, most of them are born to poor, ill-educated parents who are often the first generation of their family to be born in the UK, or US, or wherever. They're lucky if they even get a mention in the dailies. But if they're white, at least moderately well-off and well-educated it's more likely to get press - sad but true. And as I said, she's a pretty little girl and being photogenic gets you extra press.
I mentioned Jon-Benet Ramsay for the same reason, heck there was even an Oprah special on Jon-Benet, but the kids who get kidnapped by non-custodial drug-abuser parents rate little to no press - and those sort of parents all too often pimp or sell their kids, so it absolutely is as serious.
And damilola taylor was none of the above but also had wide spread media coverage
Let me put it to you this way...
Who?
It might've got press in the UK but not here.
Madeleine rated coverage on the six o'clock news two or three nights last week.
Were there Damilola Taylor banners on MDD?

it is a good idea to try to raise publicity outisde of the UK - I don't see what difference it will make within the UK, as she is almost certainly not here.
MDD is an international forum, just yesterday there was a post looking for a DJ in Spain, and PHC is in New Zealand.
Even if the forum was only UK, raising awareness (or keeping it high profile) by placing something on your own sites makes perfect sense, as the first thing the bride and groom do after their wedding disco is....go on honeymoon - and that could be to anywhere.
EDIT: Just thought...OK, maybe the second thing!

It takes 1 minute of lapse on my part for the same thing to happen to me......
Would i be Criticised and have no symathy like some of you have lack of for the mccanns.
A one minute lapse is a bit different to half an hour at a time deliberately!

So next time i put my kids to bed and go down the bottom of my garden for an hour, i,ll either get a baby sitter or wake them up and take them down there with me. My garden is 200ft, further than her parents were from the villa.
Does this make me Irresponsible putting them at danger?
Do i think every time i do this a stranger will enter my home and take them.
I think not.

Are you just trying to justfy their actions for the sake of it?
I assume that when you go down your garden for an hour you don't leave the front door unlocked

Her parents were 200ft away around a corner in a restaurant not even in view of the building not at the bottom of a quiet garden and personally I wouldnt even do that after that little girl got kidnapped from her own bath and raped ...... maybe I am far too overprotective as a parent I hold my hands up to that but I long for the day I can show my friends the graduation pictures on top of the TV ...... not the urns.

Neither did they. Entry was from the rear by forced means opening a window shutter.
i feel it is just oh so easy to pass blame on the Parents after the event.
I would do the same as them if i chose to go on holiday, although i would have a baby monitor. Having said that i only go on holiday to visit the inlaws. That way we get the time to enjoy ourselves too.
I just cant believe this forum is so full of Perfect human beings.

as far as im aware no one has blamed the parents in so much that they have said " those parents deserve to have their little girl kidnapped because they left them alone" or "she was kidnapped because she was left by her parents" all that people are saying is that the act of leaving 3 children of that age locked in a house on their own while out at a restaurant was an irresponsible one and should in this day and age be aware that you just cannot do that and live with a it wont happen to me attitude.
and my argument is that if they had been from the other end of town you know that dont have driveways and a window cleaner i feel alot more would have been made of this fact

The parents deserve every atom of the hell they are going through, however a child does not!
Just to make finding it easier

sorry i do not see that saying that someone deserves to feel bad because they have behaved irresponsibly is the same as blaming them ? still maintain that no one to my knowledge has said "they deserved to have their daughter abducted" or "their daughter was abducted because she was left alone" they have however said "they deserve to feel bad because they acted irresponsibly in leaving not one but 3 young children in a potentially far more dangerous situation than they should have" and thats before anyone even broke in.

Its called a debate. If we all agreed right or wrong it would be a little boring.
If you dont see the point dont read it or contribute. Simple really
Threads that dont interest me i simply let others contribute instead of me

I'm a moderator - my job is to read the posts - to make sure that the rules are being obeyed, I find the whole "debate" tasteless, the only important factor is the safe return of a little girl - not the contrary opinions of some DJs. - Please do not respond to my post I have no wish to be drawn into this topic. I have stated my concern and will not be posting again.

Sorry you are wrong on that one!
It's very easy to twist somebody's words by omitting some of them. If you read back to the post you have taken big issue with, you will see it reads thus:
"The parents deserve every atom of the hell they are going through, however a child does not!"
They acted extremely irresponsibly & I would say they need to feel a d@mn site worse than bad. Nowhere did I or anyone else say that they deserved to have a child abducted (& the child certainly did not deserve it) & if you think so you are very wrong indeed.
I stand by what I said & if (God forbid) there is a bad outcome for the situation, then they deserve to feel gut-wrenching remorse for the rest of their lives, purely because they acted so irresponsibly.
But at the end of the day all it is, is my opinion & it certainly wasn't aimed as a dig at you or any other parent's skills as a parent which you seem to have taken it as.
Now that I have clarified that, I must say I fully agree with Shaun that this thread is going nowhere & there is little else (if anything) to say on the subject.
Anyboby want it this thread closed or deleted?

not deleted thats for sure. closed yes
But my end to this is that no parent or person DESREVES to go through hell. Yes they will do, but no way does anyone deserve it.
