Just thinking of getting a couple of these

http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_par_56_alu_schwarz.htm

Been asked to provide background lighting for a band and was thinking of buying 2 of these for the job. They link using dmx so hopefully will do ok. Any one have any experience with these. I know there not as bright as normal bulbs but the weight and ability to colour change kind of attracts me. I have some par 10's and they are ok for background in a dark room but just not up to much else will the 56's be any better?

Hi, to be honest the cheap led 56s are not really any good for stage lighting unless you have the 1 watt versions and they are very exspensive, on the other hand there fine for disco work.If you want to light a band on the cheap you would be better of with some bog standard 56s about £18 each with bulb you can get wide ,medium and narrow beam. As for control take your pick simple chaser /sound to light or some units come with dimmer you can even run with dmx dimmer pack, or give the band a footlight contoller and let them get on with it. I have 4 LED cans, 2 Prolight ones which master and slave link and 2 from Thomann which don't. (and were cheaper)

The colours on them are very rich and deep and they create a really nice ambiance in small to medium rooms, or you could place them round rooms using them as uplighters.

I've used mine to uplight walls, placed on the floor going up and on the truss facing down, as well as lighting the truss from the floor with them, which looks pretty cool too.

I've got 8 of them, all set to dmx channel 1 then i bought an botex controller similar to this http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_ddc6_dmx_controller.htm and it does full colour control plus lets you select strobe, flash, control change and sound to light!

and if you want to use as wash washes (which most of us do) buy some of these http://www.thomann.de/gb/adam_hall_38164.htm very handy indeed.
