I am about to create one for my website, and can't use the Google sitemap generator as my site is a template and I don't use HTML.

Anyone got any examples they can show me or any ideas on how to do them?

Is it just a case of making an alphabetical list and adding the hyper links myself?

A simple bulleted list is best, should be relatively easy to knock one up manually. Don't do anything fancy (e.g. javascript tree menus etc) as sitemaps are a "last resort" for search engines as well as human visitors.

Don't worry, I won't be doing any Javascript tree menus...I haven't got a clue what they are for a start! :confused: :o

Include every page, but not popups (if you have any).

By the way, from what I remember of Google Sitemaps, it should be able to map your site without any problems. If used it on dynamically generated content before without any problems.

I did notice that your page title is always (on the pages I browsed) "Discos, DJs for Berkshire and the South." which might trip Google Sitemap up, as I think it uses page titles (i.e. all your pages would be the same).

Even if you don't use Google Sitemap, I'd recommend changing your page titles so they are specific to the individual pages, anyway.

I've actually used that one successfully with a small edit which degrades it gracefully to a bulleted list for users (and search engines) with javascript disabled.

Well yes, but the very nature of my site means that I am restricted on a lot of things unfortunately. :(

Yeah - when I decided to get the site sorted a couple of years ago I didn't know anyone that hosted or built sites, so it seemed the easiest thing to do, but I am finding it a bit restrictive now.

It'd be fairly easy to duplicate it elsewhere just by downloading the whole site then uploading it to the new server. You'd lose 1and1's "website builder" but as you say, these things are great to start out with but quickly become restrictive, so no great loss there. There are plenty good free HTML editors which would allow you to edit locally then upload changes via FTP (also free).
