Add a Mackie SWA1501 - that will give you more than enough bass for most venues and you can get them for just over £500 these days.

Would agree with that, the mackies provide good top end and middle but bass is lacking. Matching them with a good sub would be the best way to go.
I used peavey's myself but im told the swa1501 is pretty good for up to about 200 people.

I finally got a pair of SRM450s, and used them on their own last night. It was only a small room, so it was the perfect testing ground.

I only had them at half power all night!

They defy their 12" size with a big sound, and I didn't find the bass lacking at all - although it was a bit on the punchy side. I suppose it's down to personal preference, but my Peavey UL15s definitely fare better with tracks that use 'rolling' bass (such as 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' and the first three Mika tracks)

I've never heard 'The Temptations - The Way You Do The Things You Do' sound so good through a PA system though

Looks like Mackies are the most popular speakers with most forum members.

Hmm... I don't know, I'm not a Mackie enthusiast - as I said, the sound is good but not that good...

I do prefer the Peavey UL15s, but I don't prefer lugging them around all the time!

Oh, and I forgot to mention, the (excessively long) XLR cables which were supplied with the Mackies... don't work!! Initally, I thought the balanced mixer outputs weren't working, until I plugged my mic straight into the speakers, and then connected the mixer to the speakers with the mic cable. I had to use some spare DMX cables in the end, but I'm certainly not happy about that.

I have a pair of SRM450's and a SWA1501 bass bin. I don't take the bin to most venues as I don't think it warrants it. Make sure you dont have the bass cut button pushed in on the 450's - the bass should be fine. My only gripe is that they get really hot when pushing a lot of bass through even at half power (I very rarely go over half way)
