I,m always worried about break downs. So i carry almost a second disco as backup.
Ideally i,d like to reduce what i carry so would you say the following would be good enough as backup.( i,m mainly pc based)
Various cables
Mixer
PC
one CD deck( to use if i needed to swop to this pc from main one)
Amp

Yes, seems fine to me. If you've got enough equipment to carry on should a major malfunction happen...then you've got enough.

I need to cut back too, I can sometmes go on over-kill with back up, but you just never know what could happen.

Extras I take are......
back-up speakers
back-up amplifiers
back-up mixer
back-up denon dual cd player
back-up single cd player
back-up radio mic
back-up corded mic

I don't take extra lighting, but I do carry a large selection of spare lamps, fuses, spare cables, tool kit, soldering iron, spare batteries and various other bits and bobs.

Same , but i dont carry a spare mixer. Although I do carry spare cables and crossfader for same.

I think that's plenty!

If you use a PC & already carry a spare, I'm not even sure how necessary the CD deck is.

I'm CD based & carry a spare console, single CD player, amp, kettle leads (so if my lighting controller goes down I can plug my main lights directly into the mains) and various other leads & connectors...which should cover most situations.

It's also important to have those little things like spare lamps, pliers, screwdrivers, fuses etc.

Would a Laptop be a easier to carry as a backup with an external hard drive rather than PC and screen--presume you have a spare screen?

Thats what I do now I have the USB reader.

Then all you need is the spare hard drive:D

Oh well maybe thats no better!

I run with USB reader---2 hard drives and Laptop--all reasonably small and light compared to 2 PCs? and all new---If that lot goes then I will retire:eek:

As it happens because of Barn and Line Dance I also use Mini Disc Player--not your problem:D

Did you remember a spare microphone-I carry 2 spares.

Just wondering on this speaker thing Shaun, I run with Peavey Tops and Bass Bins.

For most events even in Barns this is overkill quite often even for Disco-- the other week I was two Dances into the gig at loud volume before the Groom who is a DJ noticed I only had one side working due to leaving the panning on one side:eek:

To be fair it was so loud on one side no one noticed--even me :eek:

I think you have a point, I doubt many people would notice if one side failed. I could always turn up the gain on the side that's working to compensate. Maybe it's time I left the back up speakers at home, I could sure use the extra room in the van.

all i have is a n ipod with my whole CD collection on it and if my PC goes i can fire on my Ipod and im fine. :D:D

I find if you use cheaper gear, it obviously is more likely to let you down. High maintainence is the key. I refer to my packing away thread. If you launch the stuff in your van because you want to get away 5 mins quicker then you only have yourself to blame when it does go wrong. Flight cases, bags (padded) and look after it. I am 99.9% sure my gear will be ok at the next gig. I have always had the essential bits and bobs to rectify a bad situation but I carry a spare hard drive (just in case) and cables to get me out of just about any given situation.

If something did go wrong with, lets say my HK powered Sub I would have one driven out to me ASAP by my partner. Hopefully as I look after them better than my missus, the wont let me down.

Up untill now all is fine.

Up 80GB!!! and can last for 6hrs ore more, and you can select other tracks while another is playing and creat playlists :)

As of the moment I always carry both 2 Numark Axis 9's and my PC, so if one of them goes up in flames, I've always got the other source.

I'm finding I need 3 CD players with some of the mixes I'm working on at the moment. So my intention is, get everything coffin cased, and also add a dual CD player above the mixer, that way I'll also have extra CD backup.

We also use 2 amps as standard, with 4 tops, 2 bins, so if something broke there, we could recitify the problem, it might not be as loud, but we wouldn't loose sound all together.

I have laptop as backup for playout. A spare mixer and several mics.
I use a bi-amped system, so if one amp goes, I can just run off one. If both go, i have another spare amp as well.
Lighting, well i usually only use about half of what I own at any one gig, so plenty of spares there.
Oh, and I have loads of spare leads and carry soldering iron, connectors and cable with me too.
I sometimes even have a backup suit!
