The Dj Booth can be purchased from S & H directly. Depending on type of cloth , static LED or via a controller prices range from £650 to £895. I do think this is a lot of money for what it is. For my money it is too tall and separates you too much from your audience, almost something to hide behind.(Depending how tall you are) The hieght is between 4- 5 foot by just over 6ft across.

i just use a black sheet on a table/deck stand.
Cost= £10.

Never had any complaints.

Would rather spend £700 on 4 scanners/moving heads/new speakers/ a car.....

Does seem a little expensive though, although I saw this first as part of Brian Mole's set up in his Pro-Mobile article and was extremely impressed by the way it looked. Very very smart. Is there any similar, but cheaper alternative on the market?

Honestly? I'm not sure!

There are a number of things making up my thought process at the moment. I already know I am pushing up the market I am aiming for, but equally I know that the kit probably has little to do with that market. However I DO apreciate that while kit has nothing to do with it, presentation DOES have a huge part to play in where I want to be. Now While a client won't have any idea if a light is running a pre-programmed DMX pattern or is simply stand alone (I know because my I-Show's have really not wanted to play ball and nobody has even looked like they have noticed), They almost certainly notice badly set up and poor looking set ups. Maybe suggesting that there is that much noticable difference between a set of light screens and a star cloth based front is taking it a step to far, but you get where I am coming from. If you look at the set up Brain Mole has, using the rather expensive booth cloth, it just smack of top end to me. I know it's quite possible to look really smart in other ways, but this to me just gives the whole set up the edge!

There are other thoughts going on here. I currently have a self made rigid LED frontage. Loads of great comments over the years, but as well as it now looking very tired, it is also difficult to carry without two people and too heavy. Also at 4ft square it takes up a lot of room in the van! I actually like the idea of having something small and spacesaving.

Then there's thoughts part three. In the old days of light screens, you had something fairly firm for punters to lean into (as they tend to do in there drunken state) without pulling your entire sound rig apart. Now I know that there are "deck stand" versions of the star cloth that simply attach to the deck stand, but I have a worry that this will just make me far more vunerable to the audience (and by that I don't mean that I want to distance myself from them either). Many of these versions of the star cloth seem to no pull taught either (if that makes sense). The DJ Booth version i posted does seem to cover all my bases. It just seems SO expensive!

I really can't put my finger on what I like. I've only ever seen the one used (locally), and it would have looked perfect as christmas decor, but looked out of place on the front of the disco set-up (maybe I just say a cheap one?). I've also seen pictures here on the forum and the starcloth look just doesn't do it for me personally.

I'm currently using a black flightcase skirt that I had custom made by a seamstress. I'll try get some pictures of it next time in use.

rice- don't get me wrong- i'm all in favour of looknig as good as poss and therefore getting the higher end jobs, but i still think its a lot of cash for what it is- for £800 you could have 8 Dynamo Scans and stands, A whole host of LED par can mood lighting, or lots of other stuff- oil wheel projectors etc etc- the mind boggles just thinking about it.
Surely when the dancefloor is full no one sees the star cloth anyway.

With your new rig you need to think bigger and better.

The only time I have been impressed by a star cloth was when we played a private school that had been dressed by a lighting company and they did 3 walls of the room we were in- all star clothed- a 2mx3m cloth can look lost.

I use a home-made surround to cover my deck stand & leads.

It consists of a large piece of MDF and 2 smaller pieces. I covered them all with carpet cloth, then used hinges to fix the small pieces each side of the large piece, so they just fold out. Bob's your uncle!

It looks smart & professional.

Total cost: £30-£40

very good question rice im a gaffa tape man at the moment in a variety of colours which i try and make look as inconspicuous as possible but am very open to new ideas on this .

My moving heads are floor standing, any wires are neatly concealed and taped down behind the units.

I've always thought one of those rubber H&S safety things (look like very small speed humps) would be good, but never been able to find them for sale anywhere. Considered carpet once, but not sure that has the "look" either.

A friend of mine from another forum :D had one made for himself....

Cost less that £200 but identical to the S&h one.... All he does is cover it with cloth rather than the starcloth..... Looks good and built to last... IT CAN take his kit and his body weight if not more... (we've tested :D)

I got a price of £699.00 from S & H for the works, but wouldn't pay that much for a starcloth, with a wire frame.

I remember reading somewhere on this form, that you can make one yourself, for less than £20.00, without the wire frame of course. Aparantly all you need is some flame retarded light material, some fairy lights, that come with a controller, and just sow each led through the cloth. Takes time I know, but costs less than £699.00.

I've used your quote becuase it's saved me quite a bit if typing.

I've had one of these S&H DJ Booths for the past 4 years, and wouldn't swop it for the world. I get a large amount of feedback, from guests, about how professional it looks.

I agree, it is a lot of money BUT it has a lot of distinct advantages:-

1. It looks professional;
2. It provides another lighting dimention;
3. It hides my wires;
4. It prevents 'drunk punters' getting too close with their drinks, therefore protecting the equipment, but it doesn't stop guests with requests coming round the side;
5. Unlike the cheaper 'starcloths', it is made of fire retardent material and can be manouvered on its frame to a number of different positions (i.e. high, mid low);
6. You are effectively enclosed on three sides, hence the reason why it's called a DJ Booth.

It certainly works for me. I know some other DJ's are not a great fan of starcloths and each to their own, but it does for me. :D
