Hi everyone been looking at some disco sites and come across one that has its price list based on number of guests attending the event i.e
· 30 - 70 Guests £300.00
· 70 - 120 Guests £450.00*
· 120 - 220 Guests £550.00
· 220 - 650 Guests £650.00
· 650 - 1000 Guests £800.00
I will not name the company but if they use this forum they will know who they are. Surly you cant charge £300 because there is 70 guests coming. Your cost should be based on equipment , travel , times not number of guests.

Well equipment and number of guests are linked. More people means more equipment, so I see no reason for quoting based on number of guests, its a question I ask to get an idea of the size of the function room and what I'll need to fill it. I don't publish a price list like that on my site though.

I can understand the argument for charging that way.
Doesn't the number of guests make a difference to the equipment used?
How much gear would you need for 70 people in a pub function room compared to a gig in an enormous venue where you are catering for 1,000 people?

Yes i agree more guests bigger sound system but looking at pic's the set up seem's to be the same in them all. and from the equipment list its dont have set up 1 , 2 etc its just the same rig.
I think there are in a good area have clients like BBC etc so they are taking more but £800 for upto 1000 guests i wouldnt charge that ive got a set price for all events. All private functions 1 price , weddings may vary , outdoor events are the only event that i take over £500+ for. I just think if i were a clients looking for a disco seen one saying £550 for 200+ guests im trying to say the wording is wrong in a way dont you think ?
- £200 , 5 hour disco , local , medium set up. I would book that rather than the disco taking £200 than the one taking £550 for one thats is saying if ive got 200+ coming then it cost me £550 wording is wrong dont you think ??

How can they use the same equipment & the same lights at a function for 70 people as they do at a function in a massive venue for 1,000 people?

Cos they have lot of lights tv screens speakers etc on the set up for a bigger event all they have to do is add some more speakers.

What happened to your theory that people shouldn't pay more than £120 (in your area)? lol
I see what you're saying though Ross, but I'm sure there is some deeper thought there, and as others have said more guests = more kit / Harder work (as you've got to please loads more people, and forfill more requests, deal with a larger amount of drunks etc)

People will underestimate numbers to get a cheap price---sounds a bit strange--most Discos on here would cope up to around 300 I would guess without any "extra" charge?
Also the banding is a bit odd dont you think--same sound equipment for 220 people or 650????????????????
Yes its CRAZY:D

Yeah I noticed that as well, I charge myself on a scale based on how many people there as well as what type of lighting special effects people want. But i tend to band as up to 100 people up to 200 peope up to 300 people and any above that becomes bespoke depending on location etc.
I use smaller speakers for up to 100 larger speakers for up to 200 and 4 speaker for anything over that. up to about 300 give or take.
And i wouldnt take the same amount of lighting because what I use for a small gig would be swallowed up in a large audience and the big lighting rig would blind the people in smaller group.
i think pricing depends a lot on what you do , I dont for example work in pubs or working mens clubs as a rule. Most of mine are private functions at hotels etc. Thus my pricing reflects this.

I never said that i dont want to rip my clients off i would rather work for £130A night actually lol not £120 :D and be out thursday to sunday than take £300 and be out once a week.

arrh the whole pricing thing really it should be what you feel comfortable charging you could have all the fancy lights and stuff but in the end the clients arnt bothered if your lights are super delux widgety thingy me bobs with 100 gobos and 50 colours as long as your good
i got my kit because i wanted it for me and i charge a price and it does not matter how many people are there
i think if a dj has a set price say from 7 till 12 an average gig time and includes
travling cost in there price and advertises the price then people wont have to ask how much do u charge

Turn the volume down maybe?
I am now (web site to be changed really soon) completely ready for marketing myself and not my gear. There will be absolutely no selling of bigger or smaller shows at all, just my suberb service. If it's a smaller venue, less gear needed and if it's a bigger venue I might just get my wembley arch to fit, but the client will only ever be buying ME, not the gear!

Spose you will still have to reassure people you have decent equipment---
In view of the higher prices you will be charging:D :D :D

I partly disagree. Equipment DOES matter to a certain extent!!!

I think you are missing the point... of course equipment matters, but 99% of punters wouldn't have a clue whether a 3000W system is sufficient for 150 guests or not, let alone the different ways that you could legitimately say you had a 3000W system (Amp power, speaker power, etc.). If you give your client every reason to trust you they will also trust you to bring the right equipment for the job.

It's not a terrible idea, it's just terribly executed. Punters won't know that, and logically charging more for more people makes sense, but as stated previously, "220-650" is a bit odd.
I have packages which state that my charge is the same up to 150 guests and quoted case-for-case thereafter (99% of the weddings I DJ are under 150 guests).

I charge based on what i think im worth and what i think my talents as an entertainer/dj are worth and my overheads per show irellavent of equipment etc its the age old price thing and people do it differently , there is no right or wrong way of doing it.
yes i think this way leaves the company open to abuse ...."oh yes mr dj im sure theres only 70 people coming"
then he turns up of course does a quick head count before starting asking everyone to please sit still in their seats and be quiet as hes trying to count..... no don't think so
with a view to equipment i used to do small medium and large shows .... now a thing of the past as no one actually cares as said on numerous threads i ask the client what they are looking for in lighting some just want very descreet low key some want all singing all dancing ..... yes dare i say it irellavent of venue, some just want the dancefloor covered some the whole room. It is very easy for djs to get very carried away with lighting and being bigger than the disco in here last night.
I once spoke to a dj who had all singing all dancing abstract scanners moons the lot ......got rid of them for par 56s on 2 t bars and 2 toaster 4s .... he is now charging alot of money and very busy .... why.... because he altered his customer service approach and tries to tailor what he does exactly to the client.
yes you need more sound for more people but from my experience and the feedback i have had people dont really like a loud ear bleeding disco they want music loud enough to dance to that is good quality but also not have to drive round the block to chat to their friends ..... and its a bonus if their drinks stay on the table.
