Laser or no laser?

I was thinking about getting a green laser to enhance my show, but now I'm not so sure.

I can't decide whether a laser is appropriate for weddings...which make up about 90% of my bookings.

What do you think?

I use lasers a LOT for kids parties, a FAIR BIT for 18/21/30/40 parties, and a LITTLE for weddings/older parties - usually just for the odd song where a bit of manic lighting is called for!

I think they add a little "ooh" factor if used sympathetically. I certainly wouldn't spend much money on gear if you're mainly doing weddings - something like the £100-ish purelights will be perfect. Small, light, cheap, effective.

I personally wouldn't use one at a wedding. I don't own one. Although I'm considering one of the new equinox ones (4 laser one).

To be honest Rob, I had exactly the same dilemma you're having. Loved the idea of a laser, but couldn't work out where I would use one.

It's now the standard centerpiece on my rig and used almost every gig!

I bought a laser at one point. A dual scan one from terralec (cost me £560 at that time). I was really dissapointed with it, and sold it at a loss after about 4 gigs.

Personally I would say no for weddings as it seems to 'clubby' but 18ths, 21st etc etc the are a good move. They are so cheap now. Personal opinion, dont be offended Mr Rice!!

I use mine all the time at any event,usually switch them on midway through the night or towards end of night .ive never ever had anyone complain.

I knew someone would say something about this laser!! I would love to see it in action. Another thing I wanted to say about this laser is that its all good when projected on to a flat surface, but given most circumstances us mobile jocks would be in, would you even use the fact is great for moving images on the wall. I dont think you would to be honest??

Two out of 21 posts suggest it's not a wedding thing while everyone else has great things to say about lasers and at least 2 of those actually say they use them at weddings.

I'd say there were more in favour than not based on the thread Rob.

Still it's completely up to you how you choose to spend your money.

Not wishing to split hairs here, but actually only two of those posts dismissed the use of lasers at weddings.

Vectis simply suggested that a laser gets less use at a wedding than at the parties he listed - which to be honest I think is quite obvious. While I use a laser at a wedding, I don't have it on all the time, less is more sometimes.

Elite to be fair just says in his post that he disn't like the one he bought and rarely used it. A fair point, but not specifically a wedding comment.

I wouold say so far the yes for lasers at wedding outweighs the no's about 2-1.

If you're still struggling, you can get a decent enough green laser for not much more that £120 these days. What have you to loose?

I use a laser at all functions may be less at weddings than say 21st but it then gives the potentially client who may be at the function an insight into what other equipment that I have and may suit there situation.I use two spectrum laser rockets this gives you eight beams for very little outlay:cool:

I have started to use a laser at weddings but I only use it between the hours of 11-11:30. As that is when the pace and tempo of the evening should be full swing. Works a treat for me, feedback from guests is very good too. Imagine, the sounds of Insomnia with faithless kicking off, also I suggest that you opt for DMX use as well cos the sound to light just makes it look crazy.
Lasers at weddings gets my thumbs up if used appropriately.
Also I would be careful how much power you get. I currently use (a Purelight tri color one) 120mw Red with 60mw Green . Anything over 160mw, I'd be careful.

be careful .....

some of the ones imported from china are cheap ... look great ...... but aren't legal and will probably invalidate pli etc.

I have an EU Pro 4 green laser which has a controller I use it at most functions including weddings but as ever it is turned on at the right time like any lighting I have I rotate certain lights to attract people upon the dance floor. different laser settings give a diferent enviroment, Im going for a samuri 7 colour laser next which is DMX controlled as well as has a remote

Lasers like led lighting are worth there weight in gold but I also still believe in the older stuff as well to appease all customers

If the bride and groom are old-school ravers or big Pink Floyd fans, then bust out the lasers, if they want Neil Diamond and Nat king Cole, don't bother.
