View Full Version : Debate of the week 05/06/2007 Is the upcoming smoking ban going to affect you

Have a disco

With the up and coming smoking ban to come into force on 1st July. Will it hurt the venues you do regular bookings in are they prepared to lose customers going outside for a quick one. Are we to lose more venues that mobiles do disco's in for private parties with them closing down due to lack of trade??

How are you going to be able to keep the customers from going out In residencies & musically we are gonna take the brunt of this change ie; less on the dancefloor, intermittent spurts of customers coming and going. Some nights not even happening with us losing money??

Are you happy or not with the change that is coming up

I don't think it'll have any effect on me as my gigs are almost exclusively private parties, which people aren't going to not attend just because they can't smoke. And as every venue will have to abide by the rules it isn't going to mean less bookings for venues where people usually smoke.

It'll be interesting to see whether people do take regular breaks to smoke, but then I've worked in loads of places where their function rooms are non smoking and I've never seen this happen. It could possibly be because smokers are the minority for bookings in the better venues perhaps?

I try not to do gigs in pubs, unless its some kind of occasion, as I just don't enjoy them.

I'm going to charge more for gigs for 1st july as I'm going take a roadie so I can sneak out and have a puff, as and when I want.

As new drink lables are going to appaer on bottles with warnings like cigges about how bad it is for your health, no doubt drink will be banned too, and more sound limiters and signs on discos expalining loud music can damage your ears, and theres the karaoke singer who was shot dead by a armed guard in the Phillipens for singing really bad, I best put a sticker on me too!

You can't and won't stop them. It's never had a detrimental effect on the evening for me.

The change has been in effect for over a year in Scotland. As I've previously stated, the ban has been a positive experience so far (for me).

the smoking ban is the worst thing to happen - as i have stated many times before - if they restricted the amount of places to smoke then fair enough - its easier on everyone, but a total ban is bad news, unfair on the smokers who pay enough in the extra revenue that helps support the non-smokers as well as the smokers.

I hear - what about the rights of non-smokers - they choose to smoke etc etc, a lot of smokers have been roped into it when young (peer pressure etc) and by the time they realised its not good for you etc its harder to quit smoking, i myself would prefer to be a non-smoker but its hard to give up, some people manage no problem, others really struggle, i for one have tried patches, allan carr, will power etc, but alas i can't stop - i will be trying again - but at the end of the day - its starting with fags, when do we stop with this PC rubbish?

Smoking ban will result in my Mrs turning up for the odd gig from time to time. Previously she'd only come to kids parties etc. because of ciggie smoke.

Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing! :D

Eh? I thought the extra revenue predominantly went into healthcare for victims of lung cancer and emphysema of which a disproportionate amount are smokers.

Surely if you are "trying" to quit the fact that there are fewer places you can do it will make it easier for you. I don't know of any statistics but I'd estimate that at least 25% of smokers are "trying to give up" so surely the harder and more inconvenient it is to be a smoker the easier it will be to give up.

but at the end of the day - its starting with fags, when do we stop with this PC rubbish?

The ban has been in place in the north of Ireland here for a month. It is great, a much healthier environment and the gear doesn't reek of stale smoke the next day. Plus I can get away with wearing the same clothes next day. :D The expected downturn in customers simply didn't happen, I had more revellers on the first weekend.

What will be causing the downturn in cutomers will be the ridiculous prices of houses and 50 year mortgages.

I'm lovin it :D

why are we debating this subject? Its the artists who are a fault and Society needs to encourage them not to sing songs that contain such inapproproiate words simple as. So rather than a radio edits campaign lets campaign against the record companies for having the words in the first place

Outraged at bad language in records but happy for kids to breathe secondary smoke at a wedding reception. PC rubbish indeed.

If you take things away from people who are addicted from an addiction then you tend to find that it actually increases the need, i have found that sice the smoking ban i have actually increased the amount of cigarettes that i smoke on a average night out - this is because the brain feels its being starved of the cigarettes and tells you to go outside more often (proven fact)

Prove a causal link between me getting drunk and someone in my vicinity getting drunk (reference to passive smoking, like).

I was looking at this thread and thought the ban's likely to make the lights look less effective as there'l be no smoke......
then had a serious thought - does this ban mean that our smoke machine is now illegal? We don't use it much due to smoke alarms etc and I know it doesn't generate nicotine smoke but at best I can see a smoke machine causing disgruntalment amongst a punter or two, at worst it may actually be illegal.

Any one know the legal position?

rob1963

Gary,

I haven't heard anything about smoke machines becoming illegal.

I think you'll find that the ban refers to smoking...as in ciggys & cigars...

...unless, of course, I've missed something!

Danno13

No, it doesn't apply to smoke machines, last time I checked there's no tar, carbon monoxide and all that lovely stuff in smoke fluid!

Here ya go the list!!!

Cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals. Up to 600 additives and flavorings may be in a single cigarette. But this is as nothing when we consider the 4000 chemicals that are released when a cigarette is smoked.
Nicotine
Nicotine is the main addictive ingredient in tobacco. It is readily absorbed into the blood and gives a hit (a rush) to the brain in about 10 seconds. Nicotine produces chemicals in the brain called dopamine. It is the regular hits of nicotine that the brain comes to expect and when people quit it causes withdrawl symptoms. Nicotine is a stimulant that increases the heart rate and blood pressure - this is partly a sign that the body is trying to absorb more oxygen.
Acetone
That’s the stuff used as a solvent to remove nail varnish.
Ammonia
Ammonia speeds up the delivery of the nicotine.
It freebases the nicotine in the same way as a crack user takes cocaine.
Tar
Tar is deposited into the lungs every time a person inhales. Smoking 20 or more cigarettes a day deposits 1 to 1.5 pounds into the lungs every year
Benzene
Used as a solvent in fuel & dyes. Known to cause cancer.
Cadmium
Used to make batteries, cadmium is known to cause kidney damage. It increases the risk of developing lung cancer.
Carbon monoxide
This is the same chemical pushed out by cars. It prevents the blood carrying oxygen around the body. A heavy smoker’s ability to carry oxygen around the body is reduced by up to 15%.
Hydrogen Cyanide
Yet another gas that reduces the body’s ability to carry oxygen around the body.
Pyridine
Pyridine is a central nervous system depressant that boosts the effect of smoking.
