Advice on speaker upgrade???

Im currently using a 4 speaker system comprising of 2 peavey st15 speakers floor standing and used as subs. And a pair of mackie s300z's as tops.
Now I have been thinking of changing this to a pair of peavey pro subs with matching peavey pro 12's as tops. Now someone has offered his peavey system including poles for my mackies. This will give me a complete peavey stsem which I think looks better than my mix of peavey and mackie. Question is , is this any better / louder / clearer
Or am I better staying with what I have. This is an opinions only matter guys so please dont go suggesting expensive stuff cause I have a baby due this week and the moneys the thing hence why i am considering a swap.

So bottom line is anyone suggest pro and cons of both system I normally cover gigs up to 300 people but mostly around the 200 mark including some marque's.

Oh and my amps are suited to either setup so thats not a problem.

Matt, Hi, if you go out on a smaller gig will you take the tops only?

If so will 12inch Peavey be enough for loudness and the bass end.

Thats why I use Peavey Pro 15s tops for small to medium and add the Peavey Pro Subs for louder work.

I dont think the Peavey 12inch will match the12 inch Mackie for output and bass?

Dave at Dragonfly will know-- --he used to have Peavey Cabs, now using Mackie.

Matt I used peavey 15 inch full range speakers for years before i could afford / had room for a bass bin and went active great speakers i found never had anyone say they sounded anything but brilliant ..... which quite a few people did.

used them for everything and they never complained. if you are going down a peavey route id recommend the ul-15

To echo Dragonfly, I'm a Peavey user and get nothing but good comments about clarity.

I'll typically use a pair of passive ST15s for very small (or cheap) gigs, add an active Prosub15 for say 100-150 folks, rising to two pairs of ST15s and two Prosubs for larger gigs (quite rare round these parts). The second set of speakers are actually my spare kit but hardly get used. If I get a marquee I'll often have a pair of Prosubs and a pair of ST15s just to add some 'oomph'.

When using the Prosubs I just EQ out everything below about 250Hz going off to the STs in effect making them into (very loud) 'tops'. The Prosubs get a copy of the full-range signal and the onboard crossover sinks the high-end frequencies.

Vectis do you use seperate amps for subs and st's or use the passthrough in the subs? if so what amp do you use as I thought the difference in [ower was quite large between the st's and the subs.

Crikey you must have some serious transport taking two pairs of pro subs and two pairs of st15s:D

UL15 --you would only need a pair of these as highly rated for output-- but I was told by a dealer they are used more by Bands for PA?

Lol already been offered the 4 peaveys with poles and cables for them obviously sought after speakers lol.

My passive Pro 15s sound fine on their own using the matched Peavey Powered Mixer XR600F ( 1000 watts )

ive run pro 15's and subs before and they sounded great, switched to wharfedale as i thought they had a better sound but now using mackie c300's thinking of adding a single sub. how do you wire this up or do i have to run a seperate mono feed from mixer to sub ?

At the moment I use my peavey st15's as full range subs (floor mounted) they are run from a seperate amplifier from my numark mixer (using studio output) my mackies are run on a seperate amp and fed via the mixer balanced xlr outputs. I then simply match the output from each amp via the amplifier output signal monitor.
Not the simplest I know but it means I dont have to use a crossover on this setup. I was thinking of replacing my st's with the peavey subs but now thinking that the st's may do better as tops than the mackies and just replace mackies with a pair of pro subs.

There is a variable frequency low pass filter on the pro subs so you can extend the range of the subs. Droping the volume on the pro 15p's and opening up the filter on the subs, to my ear anyway, gives them a warmer sound.

Hi Flex, my Subs simply have a socket in from the mixer amp and a filter out socket up to the Pro 15s---no adjustments that I can see?

How do you vary the frequencies and volume ?

Mine are 2 and a half years old--is there a new version with this adjustment?

Sounds like you have the passive subs not the active ones with built in amp/x-over etc.

Actives are known as PROSUB-P 's as opposed to PROSUB 's

For the avoidance of doubt I run PROSUB-P's.

AHA--sorry didnt realise--forgot Peavey are now offering active since I bought my passives :mad: THANKS V V :D

All I can say is that the sound and balance of the passives is excellent--as far as im concerned.

Matt (SPIN) why not run with Mackies on top and Peavey Subs underneath?

And you get a 15 on top as well.

If you buy the sub it has a built in crossover so you could run the whole set up on one amp only --provided you have enough power.

Ermmm correct but I think Spin seems to be going down the Peavey route so I would imagine the ST 15 is 4 ohm---my Pro 15s are.

So that would be ok--as you say Mackie at 8 ohms might cause bother if using one amp

The prosubs have a clever crossover which tricks the amp into thinking the load is 4 ohms whether or not you connect a mid top or not.
