I was interested in a couple of auctions for some cable protectors. These auction were "buy it now" with the "make an offer" so I made an off er and it was declined. Therefore I sent this email to the seller:


Your auction says make an offer, we'll probably accept it. I've now made two offers and both declined. Couldyou give me an idea what sort of offer would be accepted?

A perfectly reasonable question you would have thought. I recieved the following reply:


Hi, thanks for your offers and query. We are sorry but we NEVER trade outwith the parameters of the Ebay site sowtware as there is a risk of us being accused of fee circumvention. Fee Circumvention is not allowed on eBay. We're sorry we could not be of any more help to you,

Seemed somewhat odd, so I went back to the listing, increased my "offer" only for it to be declined again. So I sent another message:


Now I'm confused!

You have a make me an offer option on both your auctions. I have twice made an offer which you have refused. I am now simply asking you what the lowest offer you will accept is so that i can decide if i want to offer and purchase. This is in no way contrary to ebay policy, so I am not sure I understand what you mean.

Could you simply let me know what your lowest offer price would be to sell and i will make that offer - otherwise, I will just have to keep making slight increase offers until I get there, which does seem somewhat pointless!

Interestingly the seller then promptly blocked me from making any "offers" folling that email and sent the following reply:


Thank you very much for your communication. The Company considers all offers very carefully. We consider that ebay could interpret the communication as attempting to cicumvent their fees. The consequences of this could put the company at increased risk. It is Company policy and a legal responsibility of our directors to protect the Company from such perceived risk. A review of your feedback ratings coupled with what the Company considered to be unusual offer activities and corresponding communications triggered the block. This is a business decision made on an anonymous basis and the decision is clinical. We're very sorry,

Now I have very good ebay feedback, so I'm not sure where that's coming from.

Possibly quite glad that I have not been able to buy from this company!

Until the word filter has it's little glitches fixed, it's maybe better if members use their 'edit' function to replace any words that are replaced by asterix's. This will save time and confusion. :beer1:

I'm probably the only one, but I think your actions in this case were somewhat strange.

If you make an offer which is declined, you can simply make a higher offer, and continue up to your limit or until your offer is accepted, it's as simple as that.

To be honest, just because your first offers were declined, I don't really understand why you started sending the seller emails moaning about it & asking what offer they WOULD accept...thats not how it works!

The button says "Make an offer" It doesn't say "Email us to ask what we will accept, and then offer that amount - which we will obviously accept" That would defeat the whole point of this feature!

If I was selling an item with the "Make an offer" feature, and everyone who made an offer which I declined started emailing me & moaning about it, I would get annoyed...and would probably stop selling items using that feature to avoid the hassle.

As a regular ebay user - buyer and seller, I am absolutely with you Alan.

For Rob's benefit, the auction actually stated "make us an offer, more than likely we'll accept it". Why would there be any problem actually asking the seller what sort of offer they would accept. Surely if they didn't have an offer level in mind they wouldn't put the offer part in would they.

I have to say, I get hugely frustrated with the stupid faults in Ebay. This is just one. Why on earth would anyone want to waste there time upping there offer until it was accepted when you can easily ask the seller.

Reserve prices are another no brainer to me as well. We all want a reserve so we don't risk selling our item for a stupid silly price, but why on earth would you always want to keep the reserve price with held? Say you have a buyer with a budget of £100, they bid until you get to £90 and then give up at £99. Had they known the reserve was £100....

Then there's the guy I emailed to ask some questions about the size of a mirrorball and to ask if they could get hold of any other sizes. Email back with some details and help, but when I asked for some more info, no reply. Why would you do that!

Because that's how auctions work!

A reserve price is the minimum (unadvertised) price which the vendor will sell the item for. That doesn't just apply to ebay...it's the same with ALL auctions!

If you don't like the way auctions work, then it's probably best to stop using them to buy & sell things!

Rob, try and stop being so serious. Did you not notice that I was just having a rant? Not making reserve prices visible is a perfectly reasonable thing to have a rant about. If you're that concerned that I don't understand the process of auctions, maybe you'd be kind enough to explain to me why having a concealed reserve is ALWAYS a good thing to do. From where I'm sitting it seems toilet a lot of the time!

Lets look at another thing that frustrates me with ebay then while I'm on a role. Why on earth does ebay only bid up to the next highest bid point for you even when there is a reserve on an item. Let me explain. Item listed as a 99p starting price. Seller has a £50 reserve. I bid £50 and it registers my bid as 99p. I'm quite prepared to pay £50 for it which would break the researve and allow the item to sell. However, the auction ends, I'm still the only bidder at 99p, the reserve isn't met and I don't win the itm, even though I bid enough to cover the reserve!

Still, Ebay is massive and highly adictive, so can't see me not using it in the near future. Just VERY frustrating at times!

I don't think that's how it works Ricey, and if that's your experience then it must be broke for you!

Buy now will always work. The seller is allowed to decline offers.

They are two different formats, although both can be used for the same item.

I spent an hour trying today to place an ad on dj bids for same stuff I'm selling on ebay today. I had to try three times before losing my rag,:bang: and unforunately gave up, on nights tonight, so may try again.
It appears my paypal wasn't set up, so fixed that to find I had to start ad again from beginning:bang: , before being told my pic was too big,:bang: trying to sort that out caused it to go again:bang: and couldn't face trying to write it all again!!!.:beer1:
