ELC moving heads....any good??

Need some advice from users of: http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_mv250h_moving_head_elc.htm or similar units.

I've spent quite a bit of money on kit this year and can only really justify (get away with..... you know, WIFE issues! :D ) about £500 for a pair of moving heads.

Just wondering if the movement of the head damages the bulbs as they are ELC's......I use Phillips Broadway 500hr for my all my ELC fixtures, would this make any difference?

I have Shiva 250w discharge lamp scanners and they are awsome so I know how much better the luminance/optics are but was wondering if the elc moving heads are worth getting as an entry level unit for mobile use?

In my opinion, you need four moving heads to get a good effect, two just doesn't look right. If you already have scanners with discharge lamps, I would be tempted to buy two more of those.

Yeah, that's maybe a better option, I'm very happy with them after all.
At the moment I have 2 scanners with 250w discharge lamps and 2 with
250w ELC lamps. Maybe I could push the funds up a bit and buy 4 moving heads............she'll kill me!! :eek: :D :D

I've got 4 of the ELC moving heads. I've never had a problem with damage to the lamps due the moving heads. It's a non-issue.

The life of the bulb is not reduced by a significant amount. A lot of the members here use them (or the Acme equivilant). A point to note is that the movers don't bang around, they stop themselves before they touch the base etc. So there are no real vibrations effecting the lamp.

OK Jamie you convinced me to get 4, Will & Shaun you've sorted the Lamp issue for me so I suppose the next question is, what make? (keeping in mind my budget.....ok so now it's about £800 - £900).

Are these Thomann ones ok, are the Acme better, any others I should be looking at?? :)

personally i prefer discharge lamped effects color more intence gobo more refined and good lamp life
i would go for the thomman ones the only thing that will be diffrent from the acme is they might have diffrent gobos

Gobo's not a problem - I use open a quite a lot, find it gives a more dramatic sweep......got my trusty Datamoons for filling the dancefloor with gobo shapes.

Like the movers you are after, It really would be D.I.V.O.R.C.E for me if I bought 4 of those bad boys!!

Love her more than life itself, but she wants to spend the money on a dish-washer.......now that would just look silly up on my trussing.

I looked at some distage lighting but dont you think the bulbs are a bit on ' oh my god I payed what for a light bulb' level?
I know they are brighter and last a bit longer but how much longer? I have used some elc 250 gobo projectors for about 700 hours before bulb fail. And I pay about £2 a bulb in bulk.
Is there a cheap discharge alterantive? Cause I would have nightmares at night about some drunk knoking over lighting stand and taking out 4 discharge bulbs lol

Your right I don't NEED anything else I just get a bit carried away wanting a more & more spectacular show...........you are a voice of reason, I'm going to sit and think about it a bit. Maybe the 1.5 hr set-up :eek: for todays gig will convince me that I have enough kit for now............but then maybe not?!! :confused: :confused: :D
