Vista Upgrade

Hurrah!!!

My Vista upgrade has just dropped through the door!

Now usually I wouldn't be here asking, I would have popped the shiney CD into my drive and be recklessly installing. But....

Read the install instructions which says Back up your data, back it up again and then BACK UP YOUR DATA. Which started to ring a few alarm bells. I tthen says Create recovery disks. So I am doing so, but surely a windows upgrade is unlikely to loose me all my programmes and files is it?

Any tips on a successful upgrade?

Sorry I can't help on the upgrade but beware!
I recently bought a nice new shiny HP laptop with Vista installed to run my DMX lighting program on.....................I'm thinking about formating and putting XP on it becauce loads of my programmes I use won't run on it and neither the software or microsoft people have the update files yet. I'm sure this will be rectified in time but I want to use the programs now!!! :bang: :(

At least my FreeStyler DMX package works on it so I can use it for the lights, I'll stick with XP for my Music/PCDJ PC.

Stay well clear of Vista for at least another 6 months.

I'm on the fence with this one. I've been using it since it was released to volume license holders (i.e. school) back in september.

I like it, and have had little issues with compatibility. I seem to remember Tracktor 3 ran well. With regards to drivers, I've found Vista better than XP, As during install, it worked out every little bit of hardware in my box, and got it right (and I got the proper drivers, none of this windows driver stuff) so I'm please there.

I find it doesn't save my FTP U/name P/word in dreamweaver, so everytime you start it up you need to tell it again, other than that it's doing well. It runs faster than XP, and is more secure and immune to internet threats.

Oh, I've had issues with downloading videos from iTunes recently as well, but I have no proof thats Vista related, it simply failed to "Check for purchases" without uninstalling it, and then installing a lower version, then upgrading. A little bit of a hassle! But only happened twice out of 20 videos, again...I don't know that's Vista related.

If you'd like to know any specifics, lemmie know.

I have been happy with XP and it seems fine for PCDJ on my Laptop and all other functions on my main PC.

The only thing is--where do you buy a new PC or Laptop that DOESNT have Vista installed? :eek:

All the ads I see in the newspapers PC World etc are flogging it--and guess what--the cost of the packages have all gone up--what a surprise.

If you know where you can buy PCs or Laptops with XP let me know, my friend wants one.

You shouldnt have to go out and buy XP because Vista isnt satisfactory?

Rice if you have vaulable data on your PC you should have it backed up ---you could lose it ANYTIME

I've been running vista for about 5 months now, not bad but a lot of programs wont run . Although in the last month or so patches have been released for a lot of my programs to fix them.

I am currently waiting the hours it's taking to do a full back up before I install, but am I really likely to loose any data or programmes in the upgrade or are HP just being way to careful in there recomendations?

Well, I am guessing it brings me the latest version of windows! Something I would quite like to have!

The only worry is the "pre-install" bit! I really really want to know if the upgrade will keep all my files where they are or if I am highly likely to loose them?

Well, I am guessing it brings me the latest version of windows! Something I would quite like to have!



Got to be honest I found the new Multi-media player a bit of a pain coz it wants to take control of everything, I'm not keen on that.

The flash looking interface is nice but I got board of it after about a week, I have now chosen the windows classic theme and feel much more at ease with this.

On the plus side my HP Laptop did come with a nice remote control and this works great as a home entertainment tool when linked to my AV system at home. :D :D

I think if your looking for a OS for a home PC then Vista works well coz of the Multi-media benefits but for out on the road I'm not convinced it offers much more than XP.

I've just bought a new computer with vista and put Otsdj on it. I sent an email to Ots and they told me how to install it. Had a slight problem with the soundcard so had to re-calibrate it, but was easy as Ots sent instructions.

Loaded my music up and I've done 2 discos since, including a wedding tonight and it's worked a treat.

I've found that OTSDJ works just as well with Vista as it did on XP

Rule of thumb regarding a new Microsoft OS:

Wwait 'til the second Service Release before even thinking about buying it ;)
