If you were around in the 60s remember the tutor 2 projector from school class rooms with homemade oil wheels it brought a new dimension to light shows and from that came the solar 250. This might be a good thread (what are the most signifcant pieces of equipment to have a impact on mobile discos) TONYTIGER

AHHH! Tutor 2's, still got 2 of 'em, must dig them out, had one wheel with naked ladies on, very art-y! :D

Most significant/landmark pieces of mobile disco equipment:

* Tutor 2's or Hanimex(for the poorer DJ's)
* WEM column speakers 2x12" + horn.
* Par 36 Pinspots
* Sure SM58 Mic

Before CDs came along, I had 4 massive boxes of 7 inch singles, about 1500 in total, and a couple of boxes of 12 inch stuff & DMC albums. I remember my vinyl weighed more than I did!

I can also remember the size of my old Citronic disco consoles (Avon, Hawaii, Stereo popular etc) compared to my current 2-4-2 CD carpet console.

Hurrah for technology!

One day, I might even go one better, by ditching the CDs & getting a laptop or hard drive controller...or maybe I'll retire before that!

I still cringe when I think of some of the stuff I used in the 80s, such as spot boxes, fuzz lights & light screens!

It could have been worse though - at least I never had a ropelight!!!

Computers - With the introduction of Mp3s etc, it has revolutionised the way in which we can get our music and store it .

Better than carrying cd collections around with us. Not to mention the for the Karaoke DJ's amongst us, who no longer have to carry an extra case of discs.

Along with computer controlled lighting and sound systems.

OK then, how about DMX control? The ability for us to easily connect non-related equipment together to create a structured and tidy looking display

I started in the 60s retired in the 70s and returned in the New Milennium so not hands on continually--but--I would say under sound --

USB reader--what a tool--not proven yet but wow if it is reliable what a space and time saver:D

Mini Disc--personally for me the MOST reliable piece of kit ever.
Ive had them since around 1995 for (Barn Dance) and they never miss a single beat --which in my job is crucial---dont freeze, crash, play up etc. fantastic until you drop a mini disc into your drink--which has happened.:eek:

Lighting is a subject on its own but form the early days Strobes were quite something and I remember the first ground breaking sound to light units appearing in the 60s --believe it or not I still have my single channel one that still works --but dont use it any more.

On mine it was normally due to a power problem, if it ran out of batteries while recording or lost power before I had properly switched it off it wouldn't record the Table of Contents properly and I'd get a TOC error on the disk. That happened a couple of times when i was trying to make live recordings of bands.

... my crates of LPs, singles, CDs, MDs have disappeared so I now carry a couple of pocket-sized HDDs
... I can find ANY track given an artist, title or chunk of lyric in about 5 seconds flat
... operating systems, microprocessors, memory technology etc. have developed to the stage where we can port them into devices like d2's, cortex's
... lightboxes give way to projectors & screens running r4 et al
... DMX desks with dozens of programs give way to laptops with millions

I could go on but you get the gist

Gotcha! I always use large mains models, pair of Sony MDS JE 480 currently.

Only use mine for playing music-- not recording--although I believe a lot of Radio Stations do use portables for recording outdoors.

Hey Rob I still have and use spot boxes, light screens AND I have a rope light! - but I agree with you about the CD player - especially the invention of shockproof dual players.

I have come to realise that I am old fashioned (or to describe it trendily retro or traditional!) and that seems to be part of my success; however, I'm not against progress or improvement - it's just at my age and length of experience I guess I have become a bit set in my ways!

Stanton 500al?? I had to look that up to find out what it was - a cartridge for a turntable?! :confused:

Mixers with built in effects? My main mixer for mobile use doesn't even have any! And the one I do have with built-in effects, I don't use the effects anyway! :)

'Computers' is a good suggestion, but in my opinion, too vague. After all, there is a computer in every CD player!
Personal computer? I wouldn't say it has revolutionised the industry, especially considering that MP3s have been around for a decade (I believe), and the authorities are still trying to catch up with the technology.

To me, right now, whether you use MP3s or CDs is a matter of choice, one or the other - with neither being majorly superior to the other. Obviously MP3s will replace CDs eventually, and they probably have the edge if you compared the pros and cons right now.

So, to pick a 'piece of equipment' (to quote the thread title), I don't see how a personal computer applies!

I've just had to replace the minidisc player in my quiz console, as it had started playing up.

Pretty good going - considering I've been using it several times a week (for the music round in my pub quizzes) for the last 7 years...without a single problem.

If only CD players were the same...I always treat them well, but they barely last me a year!

Sadly the supply of heavy duty Mini Disc Players seem to be dying out--cant get them for example anymore in mainstream shops like Comet.

7 years eh---not bad thats about average for mine--
