MP3 collection volume

I search in the forum but i did not find anything about this solution.

I have rip my entire collection of cds to mp3s. (at 192kbps)
I have notice that the volume of the mp3s is different. (Some of them are louder that the others)
Is there any way or software that i can set my mp3s in the same volume?

try this or use your mixer gain to adjust the level while cuing the track.
i dont adjust mine and i dont have any issues with my music.

Or check your ripper to see if you can normalise as you rip (oops, too late now).

Either you re-rip using, for example, EAC set to automatically normalise or use MP3surgeon (http://www.mp3surgeon.co.uk/) or similar to normalise AND cut the intro and outro silence (and split those annoying 20 minute long last tracks which are actually the last track and a "bonus hidden track" with 12 minutes of silence between the two).

Remember, though, that differences in compression ratios means that modern pop songs will still sound louder than Motown, for example.

If you normalize now, you will reduce the quality of the MP3s, it's really something you need to do whilst ripping. I'd recommend that you just use your mixer to adjust the volumes, as already suggested - it's what it's there for! ;)

Yep I use mp3 gain set it to average about 92 db works great for me. Doesnt change quaility at all simply rewrtites the mp3 data to raise its volume.

I'd never heard of that, sounds like an impressive little tool. I didn't realise so much information was stored in the MP3 header either!

i tried setting the gain at 92db but it seemed really quiet in play out so re did it at 97 and sounded much better to me through my system ?? no idea why that would be but hey ho.

Just a note on the original post, PCDJ normalizes gain as part of the waitlist options together with the BPM, don't know if other DJ mp3 progs do it? Or are you using a HDD controller, cortex etc?

I tried Mp3 Gain and it does a great job.

I can't use any dj program (pcdj, ...) to do this because I use HD controller for my job (D2 director).

But it's physically impossible to do that Colin, surely?

When you compress a CD to Mp3 you lose information. How can you then add that information back in? Where would it come from?

Dont quite know what you are getting at there :) but with CDEX you can should you wish convert MP3 to Wav the only application that I can think of for this that might be useful for this is when downloading from Wippit(usually in MP3 format ) is the ability to convert to WAV to maybe play in a Car CD Player?

What I'm getting at, is that Wav is a lossless (almost anyway) format which means it's not compressed (or very slightly)

Mp3 is compressed, therefore taking some of the sounds inaudable to the human ear and not using them, making the file smaller.

Therefore how can you convert an Mp3 to a Wav file, as you can't put information or sound that you don't have (that's already been compressed) back in.

no, but you zip a file same as converting music to mp3, you then uncompress the zip file back to its original state same as mp3 to wav?
but as you i thought converting to mp3 removed the stuff that was not needed in the original wav file.

The difference is ZIP is what is called lossless compression, that is, you get back exactly what you started with.

When you compress a WAV to an MP3 its lossy compression and you chuck data away.. it is fundamentally impossible to get back to exactly what you started with. All you'll end up with is a massive whopping WAV file thats sounds no different to the MP3 you started with.

Sorry Daz I seemed to have missed the plot completly,but as I was saying CDEX will convert MP3 to Wav and I made no mention to its quality,but more importantly will convert WAV TO MP3 and NORMALISE:)
