the new winch stand from skytronic

hi guys a warning to all when i first bought some winch stands from skytronic a few years ago i was perfectly happy with them but obviously wear and taer i decided to replace them with the new improved version , with loger winch handle to ease the stress of the lift. so up it went almost to point of outting in the pin, what i thought was. snap goes the winch the whole lot down it came puncturing my arm. ripping a tendon hence being rushed to hospital with a suspected broken arm.had i been fully under it and hit on the head i wouldn't be posting this thread now. on thorough investigation it was found inside the new version,the winch wire connected to the pole was connected by a small nipple of metal to when given a bit of weight just pulled through the hole hence no snapping involved just a new way to save a few pennies. the original version was connected to collar which was secure around the base of the pole that is being winched. please be careful in which stands you buy and always ask how the winch wire is connected to the pole, i wouldn;t want to hear of any major casualties on hear

Sorry to hear about this mate, I hope your recovering OK. Looks like you found out the hard way RE: cheaper stands.

If you're ever looking for a new one, don't buy anything other than Ultimax, everyone here (well most people) use them, I've even got two sizes - they are very good, excellent built quality, very sturdy and generally very good.

Hope your arm sorts itself out ASAP.

Similar thing happened to me last January - Luckely we were kust starting to winch up when the wire snapped - fully rigged bar as well.

Ouch. I used to use cheap Maplins stands which use to fall over and collapse and things like that,Bought a Prolight deck stand now. Not the best in town but never falls over or collapses. Hope you get well soon.

It's all very well saying 'don't buy cheap stands', but if they are not safe for the purposes they are sold for (assuming they're not overloaded, as Jamie mentioned), then surely the company must be held liable for any consequences??

thanks for the kind words guys Ive fully recovered now still waiting to hear back from them about it. mmm avoiding it I think. I never overload my stands as safety is paramount to myself and my d.j's. what is your reccomendation for new stands in the future. it even frightens me now to use a winch stand

all sorted now I've had a full refund and a new set of stands with the cog lift instead of the winch wire(cringe) please guys don't anyone buy any sort of winch stand with winch WIRE they are just not safe. I found out the hard way . but everything sorted now and thank you for the kind words and thank you so much to dj pro from newcastle for helping sort it out , darren and gary. credit to your profession lads. theres not many of you left

no more stocking of cheep stands anymore!

it seems that skytronic winch stands (basic model) have been changed in design without skytronic being informed (factories cutting corners to reduce cost but not informing the buyer)
the stand used to have a solid steel collar at the base of the centre pole where the winch cable was attached meaning all the weight of the pole was placed on the collar. however this has now been changed the collar is no longer present and the cable is simply threaded through a small hole on the pole and a crimp is placed on the other side, as you can understand there is no way a crimp is going to hold 50Kg of weight and it has just ripped off.

this is a warning to anyone who had got a basic skytronic winch stand over the past few months (or looking to buy one).
if you have this version of the stand i would recommend you return it to the retailer you have got it from and explain the problem, obviously skytronic are aware of the issue but not all dealers may be.

as many people have indicated in this thread its not worth getting cheap stnds anymore as they have become too cheep and they are no longer sutable for the job

i must add that skytronc were not aware of this issue untill this unfortanate accident and i still have a large faith in there products.

once again thankyou sean for being so understanding in the matter and i hope you enjoy your new stands.
