You bought a PC which had a Win XP Pro sticker on it? Where did you buy it, was Win XP Pro included in the price?

Well I really don't see why the serial isn't accepted, I take it the CD you borrowed is definitely XP Pro, and not XP Home edition?

The COA is as good as the software, as I understand it.

you bought the computer with the sticker, but the listing says it doesn't have the software, therefore the sticker is a waste of time...

The sticker has the COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) on it, which I believe displays the product key, so all you need is a Windows XP Pro CD (they are all the same I believe, apart from maybe the later ones with SP2 on them). However, he has tried the key with a CD, and it doesn't work, and we're not sure why

There are primarily three different versions of XP Pro - OEM, Retail and Corporate. The licence numbers are not interchangeable between the different versions.

To complicate matters further, OEM versions can be restricted to manufacturer so a Compac Evo restore disk is what is really needed as it will include the drivers for that PC.

A set of restore discs can be bought from http://www.gennersales.co.uk/recovery/compaq.htm#Compaq_D510_e-pc_Windows_XP_Home_Professional_Recovery_CDs

yes it is illegal beacuse you can only use the code if you have a orinigal disk it dosent have to be the one with the computer but you cant broorw a disk if you want it all to be legal

Nope, all perfectly legal with any software - the CD itself isn't what you pay for, it's the license to use the software.
