What a great show.

Went to a function on Friday night that had a disco there. A great performance. He spent most of the night playing what sounded like the premixed tracks on the mastermix cd's while he leaned up the back wall, his 6 lights were on full blast all night with no variation, he didnt speak once on the mic and didnt have any front name board or anything so no one would know what disco it was. He played about 5 full length tracks at the end of the night when people danced and i never saw anyone go up to him during the night to ask for a request. To me this isnt running a disco or putting on a show, it was no way entertaining. Dont get me wrong, the mastermix stuff is good to warm up with but to play them all night long while you lean against a wall and look bored is a bit out of order. Maybe its because im a DJ myself that i was so critical but he was not what Djing is about :bang:

Whilst I totally agree with your comments, what's wrong with not having a name board? A lot of DJ's, including ourselves use a starcloth or plain front. If people are interested in booking you, they come up and ask for a card dont they? ;) :)

Out of interest, were the people who booked him happy? Did he have a full dance floor and did anyone complain or did you pick up on mumblings around the room that he was in anyway a poor DJ?

Sometimes, oddly, we are all different and do things in different ways, it doesn't make us any less good or successful at what we do.

Secondly, if your name is up there for all to see and the Disco is rubbish then everyone in that particular venue will know who NOT to book for their event.

As Rice' said above - Were people enjoying themselves? Does it matter what he played or didn't play or if he spoke on the mic or not just as long as they were happy and enjoying the night? If they didn't (and none of us were there were we) then fair comments.

As for the lights....that doesn't matter to me I'm afraid. As long as the venue is filled with vibrant colours and shapes to add to the atmosphere then that's cool. Most people won't be bothered whether there is a choreographed lightshow or not...It's generally the kids that are fascinated by the lights and the older people that squint or don't look happy if they are shining in their faces all night. I think it's all about how they are positioned myself. I leave all of mine on most of the time and only have the basics on at the beginning, during the buffet and the slow dances.

I think you are being a bit hard on the guy whoever he was but like I said, none of us were there and yes, it could have been rubbish....who knows apart from your own opinion.

I think what Rocket is saying, is that the guy wasn't actually putting any effort into his show.

Playing pre-mixed CDs and leaning against a wall doesn't sound overly entertaining to me.

I use my own made mixes for background at christmas functions , you know when they all want to chat and eat. Dont use them any other time though. As for name board I use a plain black cloth myself as I do many weddings etc and the look is everything. I feel that a big banner would look out of place in those curcumastances.

People were dancing now and again but it wasnt exactly a buzzing night. I get what you say about the name boards, but there was no front display or anything. Just a cloth on a table and 6 what looked like mini moons above. Maybe he could have purchased a variety of lights for the money rather tahn all the same. I fully understand that the gear is expensive and thats probably all he could afford but i think he could have made better use of it and looked a bit more lively than standing there looking like a bouncer most of the night, thats all. Like someone has said, we all do things differently and maybe i am too critical sometimes but its just difficult to switch off from what others do.

alot of djs don't have name boards and alot of djs dont talk over the mic except to make announcements , different people have different styles I use one or 2 long players off the mastermix cds but yes wouldnt dream of uing them all night long as people want to listen to full tracks imo. If no one went upto him all night maybe the liked what he was doing??

djs can be very critical of others who dont do things the same way as they do them which is exactly what makes our industry so diverse ..... the very day i start to do things the same as the next man or woman all my gear will be on dj bids.....

we have all had kak nights im sure where people wont budge no matter what you do its how you handle that that counts to me ....... some may lean on the wall light up a fag and give up hope ....

personally i like to try and encourage people to dance to the bitter end as it at least makes me feel that i have done my bit in trying to create an atmosphere and earned my money.

I for one have done gigs where they have wanted a certain feel created so i have taken certain lighting out ..... did a marquee this weekend they wanted a low key show one guy said to her and i quote

"my show is that good with the lights and everything that you will think robbie williams is about to jump out"

i took 4 ishows 2 moving heads and 2 acme infernos for 200 people marquee ...... at the end

"thank you so much dave that was a perfect evenig your show was EXACTLY what we had pictured we wanted and the music was EXACTLY what we wanted from start to finish"

Not a fan of disco names on the frontage as well looks out of place plain or star cloth looks more pro i think personally. Its ok playing a mix at the start of a function when people are arriving or during the buffet but all night it just lazyness.

As for signs? I used one for 20 years and it never did me any harm and only once did I get asked to cover it, and that was for a corporate event.

These days, I think the entertainment has been taken out of DJing and everyone and everything has to be anonymous. That's another story and another thread though...;)

I personaly have no issues with name boards, I have always kept mine simple though, in the old days just my name, now just the website address.

Never been asked to remove it! :)

I also use my Logo on my stuff just to tie everything in. I use it to cover the kit logo's, datamoons, speakers etc.

IMHO I don't think it looks out of place or at all intrusive.

Person in the picture is my roadie, have terrible trouble with him nicking lightbulbs, must tell his mum! :D :D

If that were the case I would find that scenario very sad but I dont neccessarily agree. I still think personality, individuality, personalization and bespoke customer care like Ricesnaps does is very much a part of the industry otherwise I am sure that www.tescomobiledisco.com would have been started by now.

You've been around a long time. How many DJs use the mic these days? How many have a little banter with punters? How many actually know how to entertain, rather than just putting music on at the right time and the right level?

I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but it is a different ball game now to what it was between 10 and 20 years ago.

The market is flooded with disco companies and DJs and the ones at the top of thier game have to find ways to improve otherwise others will come along and take the work off them.

absolutely right Darren which is why im considering changing my show again and getting rid of the much loved dynamos ..... they are so cheap now and loads of discos have them ....id hate to be the same , continually adding and removing things from the show to make me different.

The 'boards' are the grills from my PD1850 bass horns, just used them to tidy up the front a bit and to 'hide unsightly wires and stop stupid drunks pole dancing round your speakers' as guessed by Dragon Dave! :D

I wasn't able to use my horns due to noise restrictions at the venue. Didn't want to carry the heavy blighters in to the place & then not plug them in! :)

They looked much better with the lights out!

I totally agree with solitaire,I personally have been djing since 1983 when you
didnt have all these fancy lights,and if you had a rope light it was the dogs
doo dars.in them days you had to have some chat thats what people wanted
where as i find today you can let the music do the talking mostly,after all music as come along way since then.
I find it was a lot simpler then,you didnt have to spend alot of money on lights because there was non about unlike today, you have to spend money on lighting to be competative and move with the times which ive just done
4 abstract vr8,s and a philips fibre optic mood lighting get up
wish i didnt have to spend that much but thats the way it is .
